A website redesign in Ottawa usually costs 3,500 to 10,000 CAD with a local freelancer and 12,000 to 40,000 CAD with a local agency, per one 2026 Ottawa estimate, and takes about 4 to 14 weeks. For a service business, it should make booking easy on mobile, keep your Google rankings with 301 redirects, and meet accessibility rules.
Most Ottawa service businesses do not need a prettier website. They need one that turns a visitor on a phone into a call, a booking or a form, and that does not lose the Google rankings the old site earned. This page covers what a redesign should include, what it costs in Ottawa based on published sources, how long it takes, the Ontario and Quebec rules that apply, and a checklist you can hand to any designer. What should a website redesign include for an Ottawa service business?
| Part | Must have | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Homepage | What you do, where, and one clear next step above the fold, with a tap-to-call button on mobile | Visitors decide in seconds whether they are in the right place |
| Service pages | One page per service, with price guidance or "from" pricing if you can publish it | Each service can rank on its own search |
| Area pages | Only for areas you truly serve (Kanata, Orléans, Barrhaven, Gatineau), each with real local detail | Thin copy-paste area pages tend not to get indexed |
| Booking or contact | Online booking, a short form, or chat that captures name, phone and reason | A form with 12 fields loses people; see chatbot vs contact form |
| Trust | Real reviews, licences or memberships, team photos, address and phone matching your Google Business Profile | Consistency across Google and your site supports local rankings |
| French | French pages if you serve Gatineau or French-speaking clients | Required for businesses in Quebec (see below), expected by many Ottawa clients |
| Technical | Fast hosting, mobile-first layout, 301 redirects, structured data, analytics | Protects rankings and lets you measure leads |
| Ownership | Domain, hosting account and content in your name | You can leave any vendor without losing your site |
How much does a website redesign cost in Ottawa?
Few Ottawa firms publish prices, so we only list ranges we could trace to a published source. Treat vendor estimates as ballparks; they come from companies that sell this work.
| Option | Published range | Typical timeline | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ottawa agency | 12,000 to 40,000 CAD build; changes outside scope 110 to 180 CAD an hour | 8 to 14 weeks | Kolonell, October 2026 (estimate for studio sites) |
| Ottawa freelancer | 3,500 to 10,000 CAD build; changes 60 to 110 CAD an hour | 4 to 10 weeks | Same Kolonell estimate |
| Canadian small business, any provider | 3,000 to 15,000 CAD one-time build for most | Not stated | Marvel Marketing, April 2026 |
| Web designer hourly, Ottawa region | Median $36.87 an hour; range $25.08 to $58.01 | n/a | Job Bank (employee wage, not agency rate) |
| DIY or builder | Web design and build $0 to $10,000+, hosting $65 to $700+ | Your own time | GoDaddy Canada |
| AGNT/01 | Build from $999 one-time, or Growth at $1,999 plus $999 a month (CAD) | About two weeks for a typical build | Our published pricing; the site, domain and content are yours |
Checked October 2026. The Kolonell figures are one vendor's 2026 ballpark for Ottawa, built from Eastern Ontario rate cards and Clutch minimums; your quote will depend on page count, copywriting, photography and integrations. Job Bank wages were updated November 19, 2025.
What moves the price most: the number of pages, whether the designer writes the copy, French translation, custom photography, booking or payment integrations, and moving old content. If you have a quote in hand and it feels high, read is $15K for a website normal in Canada, and for ongoing costs after launch, website maintenance cost per month in Canada. How long does a website redesign take in Ottawa?
The published Ottawa estimate above puts agencies at 8 to 14 weeks and freelancers at 4 to 10 weeks. The calendar is usually set by the client side: content, photos and approvals. A realistic plan for a 5 to 15 page service site:
- Week 1, audit. Export every current URL, pull 12 months of Search Console and analytics data, list the pages that bring calls.
- Week 2, structure. Agree the page list, the main call to action and the redirect map.
- Weeks 3 and 4, design and copy. Homepage first, then a service page template. Approve both before building the rest.
- Weeks 5 and 6, build and French. Build all pages, add translations, connect booking, forms and analytics.
- Week 7, test and launch. Test on real phones, check every redirect, launch early in the week, never on a Friday.
- Weeks 8 to 12, watch. Check Search Console weekly for errors and ranking drops.
Smaller sites built on a fixed system can move faster; ours typically take about two weeks from audit to launch.
How do you redesign a website without losing Google rankings?
This is where redesigns go wrong. Google's own site move guidance says to map old URLs to new ones, use server-side permanent redirects (301 or 308) where possible, avoid redirect chains, update internal links and submit a new sitemap. It also says 301 and other permanent redirects do not cause a loss in PageRank. In practice:
| Old URL | New URL | Type |
|---|---|---|
| /services.php?id=3 | /furnace-repair-ottawa | 301 |
| /about-us.html | /about | 301 |
| /blog/2019/winter-tips | /blog/winter-furnace-tips | 301 |
| /old-promo-2021 | / (only if no close match) | 301 |
Example only. Every old URL that has traffic or links gets a one-to-one match where possible.
Keep page titles and the main headings close to the old ones for pages that already rank. Keep your phone number and address identical to your Google Business Profile. After launch, use Search Console to watch for crawl errors. Our Ottawa local SEO checklist covers the rest.
What Ontario and Quebec rules apply to a website redesign?
- Accessibility (Ontario). Since January 1, 2021, the AODA requires businesses and non-profits with 50 or more employees to make public websites accessible. Public websites and content posted after January 1, 2012 must meet WCAG 2.0 Level AA, except live captions and pre-recorded audio descriptions (Government of Ontario). Smaller businesses are not required to, but accessible sites are easier for everyone to use, so build to the same standard.
- French (Quebec). If your business is in Quebec, including Gatineau, websites and other commercial documents must be available in French (Éducaloi). Ottawa-side businesses are not covered by that rule, but many serve French-speaking clients.
- Privacy. Contact forms, chat and booking collect personal information. Federal privacy law (PIPEDA) applies to most private-sector businesses in Ontario; publish a plain privacy policy (Office of the Privacy Commissioner). Health clinics also have PHIPA duties.
- Email sign-ups. A newsletter box needs CASL-compliant consent wording; an unticked checkbox and a clear description of what people will receive.
This is general information, not legal advice.
How fast should a redesigned website be?
Google's Core Web Vitals give clear targets for a good experience: Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint of 200 milliseconds or less, and Cumulative Layout Shift of 0.1 or less (web.dev). Test your current homepage and the new one on mobile with PageSpeed Insights and put the targets in your contract. The usual culprits are oversized images, sliders, too many plugins and third-party scripts.
Do you need a refresh, a redesign or a rebuild?
- Does the site get calls and forms, and look fine on a phone? Refresh: new photos, updated copy, faster images, clearer buttons. Days, not weeks.
- Does it look dated or confuse visitors, but the platform works and you can edit it? Redesign: new layout and copy on the same platform, with the redirect map.
- Is it slow, hard to edit, locked to a vendor or broken on mobile? Rebuild: new platform, full migration, redirects and testing.
- Do you not own the domain or hosting account? Fix ownership first, whatever else you decide.
