The best Smith.ai alternatives for Canada depend on what you need. For French and English AI answering, look at Aria, Polaris Voice or Voxara. For live agents in Canada, Telelink. For US live services, Ruby, AnswerConnect or Abby Connect. For done-for-you AI plus website and follow-up, AGNT/01. Check data location before you sign.
Most "Smith.ai alternatives" lists are written for US buyers. They skip the three questions a Canadian business actually asks: does it answer in French, where is my callers' data stored, and what will it cost in Canadian dollars. This page answers those, using only what each vendor publishes on its own site, checked October 31, 2026.
We sell an AI front desk ourselves, so read this with that in mind. We've included AGNT/01 as one row and been plain about where others are a better fit.
What does Smith.ai offer, and why look elsewhere?
Smith.ai sells three models: AI-first, hybrid and human-first. On its AI receptionist pricing page, a free plan covers 25 calls a month ($3.00 per call after), and Pro starts at $150 a month for 75 calls. On its human receptionist pricing page, plans run from $300 a month for 30 calls to $2,100 for 300 calls, with booking at $1.50 per call and conflict checks at $0.50.
The strengths are real: per-call billing, North America-based agents, no setup fees, a Clio integration, month-to-month terms and a 30-day money-back guarantee on human plans. The reasons Canadian buyers look elsewhere are usually these:
- Language: Smith.ai's bilingual page covers English and Spanish. French isn't listed.
- Data location: it is a US company, which means extra steps for Quebec businesses and a cross-border conversation for regulated professions elsewhere.
- Currency: the pricing pages don't state a currency. Budget for possible US-dollar billing and check the Bank of Canada daily rate.
- Add-ons: booking, follow-up texts and call recording are per-call extras on human plans, so heavy users pay more than the headline price.

What would 100 calls a month cost on each service?
Headline prices hide the units. Some vendors bill per call, some per minute, one per unique caller. Here is our arithmetic for one example: 100 calls a month averaging 3 minutes, so 300 minutes. It uses only the published plan and overage rates, with no add-ons, and picks the cheapest published combination.
| Service | Cheapest published fit | Monthly cost |
|---|---|---|
| Smith.ai human | Basic, 90 calls, plus 10 calls at $10.50 | $915 |
| Smith.ai AI | Pro, 75 calls, plus 25 calls at $2.50 | $212.50 |
| AnswerConnect | Growth, 300 minutes | $395 |
| Polaris Voice | Professional, 500 minutes | $199 |
| Aria | Pro, 600 minutes | $189 CAD |
| Dialzara | Business Pro, 220 minutes, plus 80 at $0.45 | $135 |
| Voxara | Starter, 300 minutes | $99 CAD |
| Upfirst | Premium, 90 calls, plus 10 at $1 | US$69.95 |
AGNT/01 arithmetic from the published rates on October 31, 2026. Your call length and volume will differ, and features differ a lot between rows: a live agent and an AI voice are not the same product. Ruby, Abby Connect, Telelink, Rosie and Goodcall are left out because their published pages don't give enough to calculate this example.
Two takeaways. Live agents cost several times more per call than AI, which is the price of a human. And among AI services, the gap between cheapest and dearest is smaller than the gap in what they do: transfers, booking, French and setup help are where they differ.
Which Smith.ai alternative should you choose?
Answer four questions in order. The first "yes" narrows your list.
- Do many of your callers speak French? Shortlist services that list French on their own pages: Aria, Polaris Voice, Voxara, or a done-for-you option that writes and reviews a French script. Test with a real French call before you sign.
- Must callers' data stay in Canada? Ask for it in writing. Polaris Voice and Telelink make that claim on their sites; for anyone else, ask. If you are in Quebec, plan a privacy impact assessment for any service outside the province.
- Do you need a human on every call? Choose a live or hybrid service: Telelink in Canada, or Ruby, AnswerConnect, Abby Connect or Smith.ai's human plans. Budget for per-minute or per-call costs as volume grows.
- Do you want it set up and run for you? Self-serve tools are cheap but need your time to train and maintain. Voxara, Dialzara's done-for-you plan and AGNT/01 do the setup; AGNT/01 also builds the website and follow-up around it.
If none of those apply, pick on price and trial experience. Several AI services offer free trials or free tiers, so call each one as a customer would and compare what you hear. Our guide to what an AI receptionist can and cannot do will help you write a fair test.
What should Canadian businesses check on privacy?
Any answering service collects personal information: names, numbers, reasons for calling and often recordings. In Canada you stay responsible for it, wherever the vendor is.
- PIPEDA accountability: the federal privacy commissioner's guidelines for processing personal data across borders say organizations remain accountable for information transferred to a third party for processing and must use contracts or other means to provide a comparable level of protection. Being transparent with customers about it is part of the deal.
- Quebec: the Commission d'accès à l'information says that since September 2023, an organization must complete a privacy impact assessment before communicating personal information outside Quebec.
- Call recording: the commissioner's guidance on recording customer calls treats recordings as personal information to be handled from collection to disposal. Tell callers at the start. See our call recording consent guide.
- Health clinics in Ontario: PHIPA applies on top. A US "HIPAA compliant" badge is about US law.
- Law firms: confidentiality duties start with the first caller, even one who never hires you. Our guide to legal answering services in Canada covers what to require.
Questions to send every vendor
- In which country are call recordings, transcripts and messages stored?
- From which countries can your staff or subcontractors access them?
- Is caller data used to train AI models, and can we opt out in writing?
- What is the default retention period, and can we shorten it?
- Will you sign a data processing agreement covering breach notice and deletion when we leave?
- Do you bill in Canadian or US dollars?
- Can you answer in French, and who reviews the French script?
How do you switch from Smith.ai without missing calls?
- Export your call history and intake questions from Smith.ai before you cancel.
- Set up the new service on a separate number and test it with at least 20 real-style calls, including after-hours and French calls if they matter.
- Check the notice period. Smith.ai's AI plan FAQ asks for 30 days' notice; the human plan bills through the end of the current monthly cycle.
- Move call forwarding during a quiet hour and call your own number from a mobile to confirm.
- Run both for a week if you can, then cancel.
Where does AGNT/01 fit?
AGNT/01 is a different kind of option. We don't only answer calls; we build the website, the AI front desk that answers calls, chat and texts 24/7, booking, follow-up on every lead and review requests, then run it and report the return every month. That suits owner-led service firms where one new client is worth a lot. If you only need overflow answering at the lowest price, one of the self-serve AI tools above is likely a better fit, and if you need Canadian-only data storage, choose a vendor that commits to it in writing.
Pricing is public: Build from $999 one-time, or Growth at $1,999 plus $999 a month (CAD). See the published pricing or compare an AI receptionist with a human receptionist.
Not sure which one fits your calls?
We'll look at your call volume, languages and after-hours gaps and tell you honestly which option fits, even if it isn't us. Free, founder-led, 30 minutes.

Does Smith.ai work in Canada?
Yes, Canadian businesses can use it. It is a US company with North America-based agents, and its bilingual answering covers English and Spanish rather than French. Its pricing pages do not state a currency, so check how you will be billed.
What is the best Smith.ai alternative for French-speaking callers?
Look at services that list French on their own pages, such as Aria, Polaris Voice and Voxara, or a done-for-you provider that writes and reviews a French script. Always test with a real French call before signing.
Is there a Canadian answering service that keeps data in Canada?
Some say so. Polaris Voice states that it stores data in Canada, and Telelink says data is stored domestically. These are vendor claims, so ask for the commitment in your contract.
Is an AI receptionist cheaper than Smith.ai's human plans?
Usually, by a wide margin. In our example of 100 three-minute calls a month, Smith.ai's human Basic plan works out to $915, while published AI plans ranged from about $70 to $213. A live person and an AI voice are different products, though.
Can I use a US answering service under PIPEDA?
Yes, but you remain accountable. The Privacy Commissioner says organizations must use contracts or other means to give a comparable level of protection when a third party processes data. In Quebec, a privacy impact assessment is required before data leaves the province.
How do I switch answering services without missing calls?
Set up the new service on a separate number, test it with realistic calls, check your old provider's notice period, then move call forwarding during a quiet hour and test from a mobile. Run both for a week if you can.
Is AGNT/01 a Smith.ai alternative?
Partly. AGNT/01 builds and runs a full AI front desk with website, booking, follow-up and review requests for Canadian service firms, priced from $999 one-time for a Build or $1,999 plus $999 a month for Growth. For cheap overflow answering alone, a self-serve AI tool may fit better.
