Answering Service Cost Per Month in Canada (2026 Prices)

Quick answer

Published live answering plans run from $250 a month for 50 receptionist minutes (Ruby) to $2,100 for 300 calls (Smith.ai), in US dollars, with per-call overage of $8.50 to $11.50. The large Canadian providers (On Call Centre, Answer 365, AnswerPlus, Intercon) price on request, often per minute. AI receptionists start at $49 to $99 CAD.

"How much does an answering service typically cost per month?" is the top related question Google shows Canadians for this search, and most Canadian providers will not say until you fill in a form. This page collects what is published, works three realistic bills, and marks every price we could not find.

How much does an answering service typically cost per month?

Using only prices published on vendor pages on October 24, 2026: a small live-answering plan costs $250 to $330 a month for 50 to 100 receptionist minutes or 30 calls, a mid plan $600 to $850 for 200 minutes or 90 calls, and a busy plan $1,380 to $2,100 for 500 minutes or 300 calls. Those figures come from US-based providers (Ruby, Abby, Smith.ai) that serve Canadian businesses and bill in US dollars.

The four Canadian live providers we checked publish no prices. Intercon Messaging's FAQ explains it bills per minute rather than a flat monthly rate; On Call Centre (Ottawa), Answer 365 (Halifax) and AnswerPlus (Ontario) route you to a quote request. That is normal, not a red flag, but have your call volume ready before you ask.

Per minute, per call or flat rate: which is cheaper?

Three billing units are in use, and the cheapest one depends on how long your calls run.

  • Per minute (Ruby, Abby, LEX, Intercon). You buy a block of receptionist minutes; time on the phone and time writing your message both count. LEX states that interactions are rounded up to the nearest minute, so a 61-second call bills as two. Good for short, frequent calls. Expensive for long intake conversations.
  • Per call (Smith.ai). Every answered call costs the same regardless of length: $300 for 30 calls is $10.00 a call, $2,100 for 300 calls is $7.00. Good for long, detailed calls such as legal intake. Expensive if half your calls are 20-second "are you open" questions.
  • Flat rate with a cap (most AI receptionists). A fixed monthly fee covers a set number of minutes, then per-minute overage applies: Voxara $49 CAD for 100 minutes then $0.45 a minute; Dialzara $29 USD for 60 minutes then $0.48.

Rule of thumb from the published rates: Ruby's 100-minute plan is $395 divided by 100, or $3.95 a receptionist minute. Smith.ai's 90-call plan is $810 divided by 90, or $9.00 a call. Under an average of 2.3 minutes a call, per-minute is cheaper; above it, per-call wins.

What drives the monthly bill?

  1. Call volume and length. The only two numbers that matter on a per-minute or per-call plan.
  2. Hours of coverage. Smith.ai states calls at 2 pm and 2 am cost the same; Ruby includes after-hours and holidays. Some Canadian providers quote after-hours separately, so ask.
  3. Script complexity. Intake forms with ten questions take longer per call. Smith.ai prices extended intake at $1.50 a call and custom questions at $0.25 each.
  4. Transfers and routing. Smith.ai includes one transfer destination on Starter and charges $15 a month per extra destination; complex routing is $1.50 a call.
  5. Integrations. Pushing messages into your CRM or practice software: Smith.ai lists the first CRM free and $0.50 a call per additional one.
  6. Bilingual handling. Canadian providers bundle English and French. US providers offer Spanish, and Smith.ai charges $1.00 a call for a dedicated Spanish line. French is rarely available from US providers.
  7. Setup fees and contracts. Ruby states no activation or setup fees. LEX's FAQ says each plan shows any setup fee. Always ask.

Three worked examples with the math shown

All three use published rates from the table. Volumes are illustrative inputs; swap in your own.

Example 1: Solo plumber, after-hours only

40 calls a month, average 3 minutes, 120 receptionist minutes.

  • Ruby: 100 minutes is not enough, so the 200-minute plan at $720 USD.
  • Abby: 200-minute plan at $599 USD.
  • Smith.ai per call: Starter 30 calls $300 plus 10 overage calls at $11.50, which is $115, total $415 USD. The 90-call Basic plan at $810 would be worse.
  • AI alternative: Voxara Starter $99 CAD with 300 minutes, or Aria Starter $59 CAD with 150 minutes, both inside the cap.

Example 2: Dental clinic, lunch and overflow

150 calls a month, average 4 minutes, 600 receptionist minutes.

  • Ruby: 500-minute plan $1,725 USD plus 100 minutes of overage at a rate Ruby does not publish. Budget above $1,725.
  • Abby: 500-minute plan $1,380 USD plus 100 minutes at an unpublished overage rate.
  • Smith.ai per call: Basic 90 calls $810 plus 60 overage calls at $10.50, which is $630, total $1,440 USD. Or Pro 300 calls at $2,100 with headroom.
  • AI alternative: Voxara Growth $247 CAD with 800 minutes and SMS reminders; Aria Pro $189 CAD with 600 minutes (right at the cap, so expect top-ups).

Example 3: Law firm, full-day intake

300 calls a month, average 5 minutes, 1,500 receptionist minutes.

  • Smith.ai per call: Pro 300 calls $2,100 USD. Add booking at $1.50 and conflict checks at $0.50 on every call: 300 times $2.00 is $600, total $2,700 USD.
  • LEX Reception: the Magnus tier is 1,500 minutes; the monthly price loads on the plans page by region and was not in the page we fetched.
  • Ruby: above the largest published plan (500 minutes); custom quote.
  • AI alternative: Voxara Pro $597 CAD with 2,000 minutes; Dialzara Elite $349 USD with 1,000 minutes plus 500 minutes at $0.35, which is $175, total $524 USD. Law firms also need a human on conflicts and anything close to advice, so budget staff time or a managed service on top.

When does AI change the math?

In every example above, the AI plan is a fraction of the live plan at the same volume because software minutes cost cents, not dollars. Goodcall's pricing page puts a live service at about $1.50 to $1.90 a minute; the published Ruby rate works out to $3.95 a minute at 100 minutes. Against that, AI overage of $0.30 to $0.48 a minute is a different category of cost.

That does not make AI the automatic answer. Live receptionists still win when callers are distressed, when the call needs judgement in the moment, and when your market expects a human voice. The honest middle is AI first with instant transfer to a person on request, which caps the live bill at the calls that need a human. Our AI receptionist pricing guide covers the AI side in detail, and $50 tool vs $1,000 service explains what the managed layer costs and buys. Answering service cost: FAQ

How much does an answering service cost per month in Canada?

Published plans from US providers that serve Canada run from $164 to $250 a month for 50 minutes (Abby, Ruby) to $2,100 for 300 calls (Smith.ai), in US dollars. The major Canadian live providers, On Call Centre, Answer 365, AnswerPlus and Intercon, quote after you share call volume.

Do answering services charge per call or per minute?

Both models exist. Ruby, Abby, LEX and Intercon bill per receptionist minute; Smith.ai bills per call with overage of $8.50 to $11.50 a call. Per minute is cheaper for short calls, per call for long intake conversations. Using published rates, the crossover is an average call of roughly 2.3 minutes.

Is an after-hours answering service more expensive?

Not always. Smith.ai states calls at 2 am cost the same as at 2 pm and Ruby includes after-hours, weekends and holidays in every plan. Some Canadian providers quote after-hours coverage separately, so ask for the rate card before signing.

Why do Canadian answering services not publish prices?

Most build a custom script, routing and coverage plan per client and price on volume, so they quote after a discovery call. Intercon's FAQ explains it charges per minute rather than a flat monthly rate. Bring three months of call counts and average durations to get an accurate quote.

What is a billable minute for an answering service?

Intercon defines it as the time a team member is on your account working on your behalf, which includes time after the call writing up the message. LEX rounds every interaction up to the nearest minute. Expect billable minutes to run higher than talk time.

Is an answering service worth it for a small business?

It depends on what an unanswered call is worth to you. Compare the plan cost against your missed-call count and average job value. If one new client is worth several hundred dollars, a $300 to $400 plan can pay back on a few recovered calls; AI first with human transfer lowers the bill further.

Are answering service prices in CAD or USD?

Ruby, Abby, Smith.ai and LEX are US companies and publish US dollar prices. Canadian providers quote in Canadian dollars, and Canadian AI receptionists Voxara and Aria publish CAD prices from $49 and $59 a month. Convert before comparing.
