Law Firm Marketing Cost in Canada: 2026 Retainers, Ads and What to Fix First

Quick answer

Canadian law firm marketing ranges from a do-it-yourself website and review routine to agency retainers of $2,500 to $15,000 CAD a month, the Toronto SEO range one agency publishes, with ad spend on top. Before paying any retainer, make sure every call is answered and consults get booked fast, or the spend leaks.

"Is it worth it to pay $3k a month for a legal marketing agency?" is one of the most common questions small-firm lawyers ask online. The honest answer is: it depends less on the agency than on what happens after a prospect calls. This guide shows the prices Canadian and North American vendors actually publish, what lawyers report after paying them, and a simple way to work out what your firm can afford.

General information, not legal advice. Check your own law society's marketing rules.

How much does law firm marketing cost per month in Canada?

Most legal marketing agencies do not publish prices. The figures below are the ones we could verify on vendor pages on October 31, 2026. Where a page does not state a currency, we say so rather than guess.

Checked October 2026. Seologist figures are for SEO in general, not law firms. Grow Law Firm is a US agency and does not state a currency. Google does not publish typical legal cost per click for Canada; use Keyword Planner in your own Google Ads account for estimates.

A realistic all-in picture for a small firm buying from an agency is a retainer plus ad spend plus website upkeep. Even at the low end of the Toronto SEO range, a retainer is $30,000 CAD a year before a single ad dollar is spent, which is why the break-even maths below matters.

Is a $3,000 a month legal marketing agency worth it?

It can be, if three things are true: the agency reports on signed files, not clicks; your intake converts the leads it sends; and the work is something you could not do cheaply yourself. It is not worth it when you are paying for generic social posts, or when calls from paid ads go to voicemail.

A useful test is to ask the agency for last quarter's numbers in this order: leads, consults booked, files opened, fees. If they can only show impressions and clicks, you cannot tell whether the retainer pays for itself.

What do lawyers on Reddit say about marketing agencies?

We read recent r/LawFirm threads where firm owners talked about what they pay and what they got. Most posters are in the US, but the traps are the same in Canada. Paraphrased:

  • A partner at a boutique firm asked whether a $3k a month legal marketing agency was worth it after a year of generic social captions with no clients to show. The top replies were blunt: if the data ties zero revenue to the work, end it; social posts alone will not move the needle; one lawyer said learning Google Ads was a better use of the money.
  • A firm owner who met five agencies from a practice management vendor's partner list found they all sold much the same thing and asked who writes the content. Replies said the better question is how each agency tracks marketing through to signed cases.
  • An estate planning lawyer needed to fire a marketing service that had billed monthly for five months without doing the work. Local pitches wanted $5,000 to $15,000 for rebranding before any advertising, and each vendor covered only one channel.
  • In a thread on what is actually working right now, owners said referrals remain the backbone, that steady Google reviews and local SEO help, and that legal keywords are expensive, so paid ads only work when the landing page and intake are dialled in.

How much should a Canadian law firm spend on marketing?

There is no Canadian benchmark we could verify. US sources quote budgets as a share of revenue; One Legal, for example, cites an ABA survey finding that over half of US firms operate without a marketing budget. A share-of-revenue rule is less useful than working back from your own numbers: what one retained client is worth in fees, and how many consults it takes to sign one.

Break-even calculator: what can your firm afford to spend?

All inputs are your own assumptions. Nothing here is a benchmark.

Method: clients needed = spend / fee, rounded up. Consults needed = clients needed / conversion rate. The last input adjusts for clients who would have hired you anyway through referrals, so the true requirement is divided by that share.

Run it with your real fee and conversion numbers. If the consults needed look out of reach, the cheapest fix is usually conversion, not more spend: answering every call, replying within minutes and booking the consult on the first contact. Our missed call cost calculator for law firms shows what unanswered calls cost on the same inputs.

Which law firm marketing channels work, and in what order?

  1. Answer and book. Every channel below sends people to your phone or form. If after-hours calls hit voicemail, fix that first. See AI receptionist for law firms.
  2. Google Business Profile and reviews. Ask every satisfied client for a Google review using Google's own review link. Google's policy bans offering incentives for reviews.
  3. A website that books consults. Practice area pages, lawyer bios and a short screening step before booking.
  4. Local SEO and AI answers. Clear, accurate pages that search engines and AI assistants can quote. See AEO for law firms in Canada.
  5. Paid search and Local Services Ads. Fast, but only profitable once steps 1 to 3 convert.
  6. Social media. Useful for referral sources and reputation; rarely the first source of new files on its own.

What do Canadian law society rules say about law firm marketing?

Whatever you spend, the content must follow your law society's marketing rules. In Ontario, Rule 4.2-1 of the Law Society of Ontario's Rules of Professional Conduct allows marketing only if it is demonstrably true, accurate and verifiable, not misleading, and in the public interest. Under the Model Code that most law societies follow, lawyers should not call themselves specialists unless certified, and commentary flags testimonials with emotional appeals. British Columbia has its own Chapter 4 on marketing. You remain responsible for what an agency publishes in your name, so review ad copy and posts before they go live.

Follow-up emails and texts to prospects are commercial electronic messages under CASL and need consent, identification and an unsubscribe option. See CASL for law firms.

Agency, freelancer or in-house: which costs less for a small firm?

The three options cost money in different places, so compare them on the same year.

  • Full-service agency. Highest monthly cost, lowest time cost for you. Worth it for a firm in a competitive practice area and city that needs SEO, ads and content at once, and has intake that converts. The risk is paying for activity rather than files.
  • Freelancers by channel. A Google Ads specialist, a writer and a web person can cost less than one agency, but you become the project manager. The estate planning lawyer above found that each vendor covered only one channel, which is common.
  • In-house. A staff member who posts, asks for reviews and updates the site is cheaper per hour, but lawyers in the threads above said they do not have the billable hours to spare, and the work tends to stop when the office gets busy.
  • Systems first. Automating the repetitive parts (answering, follow-up, review requests) removes the work that most often gets dropped, whatever you choose for SEO and ads.

What are the red flags in a law firm marketing proposal?

  • A long minimum term with automatic renewal and a short cancellation window.
  • The agency, not the firm, owns the Google Ads account, the website or the domain.
  • Reports that show impressions, clicks and "engagement" but no consults or files.
  • Promises of page one or a set number of cases. Nobody controls Google's results, and outcome claims in your own marketing can raise law society issues.
  • Content written by someone with no review step by a lawyer.
  • Ad campaigns with no call tracking, so nobody can tell which calls came from ads.
  • A large upfront rebrand before any lead-generation work starts.

What should a legal marketing contract include?

  • Month-to-month terms, or a short minimum with a clear exit date.
  • Your firm owns the Google Ads account, Google Business Profile, analytics, domain and website content, with admin access from day one.
  • Monthly reporting on leads, consults booked and files opened, not only traffic.
  • Who writes and who approves content, and a promise that nothing is published without your sign-off.
  • Call tracking on ads, and access to the search terms report.
  • A written list of deliverables per month, so you can check them.

Where does AGNT/01 fit?

AGNT/01 is not a traditional agency. We build and run the part most agencies skip: a website that books consults and a 24/7 AI front desk that answers calls, chats and texts, follows up on every lead and sends review requests. Pricing is published: Build from $999 one-time, or Growth at $1,999 plus $999 a month (CAD), taxes extra. The Growth retainer has a 6-month minimum, then runs month to month, and you own your domain, content and data. See published pricing. Law firm marketing cost in Canada: FAQ

How much does law firm marketing cost per month in Canada?

Published Toronto SEO retainers run $2,500 to $15,000 CAD a month or more, and ad spend is extra. A firm can start for much less by fixing intake, asking every client for a Google review and keeping a website that books consults.

Is it worth paying $3,000 a month for a legal marketing agency?

Only if the agency reports leads, consults and signed files, and your intake converts those leads. If you cannot tie the retainer to new files after a few months, renegotiate or leave. Lawyers on Reddit report paying for generic social posts that produced no clients.

How much do Google Ads cost for lawyers in Canada?

Google does not publish typical legal cost per click for Canada. You set your own budget, and Keyword Planner in your Google Ads account gives estimates for your city and practice area. Legal keywords are known to be among the more expensive.

Can a law firm offer a discount for Google reviews?

No. Google's review policy prohibits offering incentives such as payments, discounts or free services in exchange for reviews. Ask every client the same way instead, without filtering who you ask.

Do law society rules apply to marketing an agency writes for us?

Yes. The lawyer remains responsible for marketing published in the firm's name. In Ontario, Rule 4.2-1 requires marketing to be demonstrably true, accurate and verifiable and not misleading. This is general information, not legal advice.

What should a law firm fix before spending more on marketing?

Intake. Answer every call, including after hours, reply to web inquiries within minutes, and book the consult on first contact. More leads into a leaky intake only raises the cost per signed file.

What does AGNT/01 cost for a law firm?

Build from $999 one-time, or Growth at $1,999 plus $999 a month (CAD), taxes extra. Growth includes a 24/7 AI front desk, lead follow-up, review requests and four search articles a month, with a 6-month minimum.
