AEO for Law Firms in Canada: How to Get Your Firm Cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews

More people now ask ChatGPT or Google's AI Overview "who is a good family lawyer near me" before they ever see a list of links. Here is how those systems find sources, what a Canadian firm can do about it, and where the Law Society's marketing rules draw the line.

Quick answer

AEO for law firms means making your site the source AI tools quote: let their crawlers in, answer real client questions in the first lines of each page, add accurate LegalService and Person schema, keep your Google and directory listings consistent, and earn reviews. In Canada, everything an AI might quote is still marketing under Law Society rules.

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is search work aimed at a new reader: the AI system that writes an answer and picks a few sources to cite. Some people call the same idea GEO, for generative engine optimization. The labels matter less than the mechanics, and the mechanics are mostly published by the companies themselves.

Nobody can promise that ChatGPT will name your firm. Bing's own webmaster guidelines say plainly that this kind of optimization does not guarantee grounding or citations in AI experiences. What you can do is remove the reasons an AI would skip you. This guide is general information for Canadian firms, not legal or ethics advice.

How do ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews pick their sources?

Each system documents part of how it finds pages. Here is what the official pages say, checked October 31, 2026.

EngineWhat the company saysWhat it means for your firm
ChatGPT searchOpenAI uses the OAI-SearchBot crawler to surface sites in ChatGPT's search features. Sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links. GPTBot is a separate setting for training.Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt. You can block GPTBot and still appear in search answers.
Google AI Overviews and AI ModeNo additional requirements beyond normal Search: a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Both may use "query fan-out", issuing several related searches to build one answer. Structured data should match visible text.Classic SEO is the entry ticket. Pages that answer the follow-up questions too get more chances to be pulled in.
Gemini and other Google AIGoogle points site owners to the Google-Extended token to limit AI training and grounding in some of its other systems.Blocking Google-Extended is a choice with trade-offs; it does not remove you from Search.
PerplexityPerplexityBot surfaces and links websites in Perplexity search results and is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models.Allow PerplexityBot if you want to be cited there.
Microsoft CopilotBing's guidelines say Copilot shares crawling and indexing with Bing search. Bing recommends IndexNow for discovery, and its AI Performance report shows which of your pages are cited in Copilot answers.Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap and use IndexNow.

The common thread is boring and useful: AI answers are built on top of search indexes. If a page isn't crawlable, indexed and clear, it doesn't get quoted. For the local business version of this, see our guide to answer engine optimization for local business and why ChatGPT often cites Yelp before your website.

Can Canadian lawyers do AEO under the Law Society rules?

Yes, but AEO doesn't get a separate rulebook. In Ontario, Chapter 4 of the LSO Rules of Professional Conduct applies to anything you publish to attract clients, and an AI can quote any sentence on your site out of context. Write every page as if one sentence will be lifted into an answer.

LSO ruleWhat it means for AEO content
4.2-1: true, accurate, verifiable, not misleadingNo "best divorce lawyer in Toronto" pages built to catch AI prompts. Every claim on a page must be provable.
4.2-1 commentary: past resultsIf you publish amounts recovered, add that past results do not guarantee future outcomes and results vary. An AI may quote the number without it, so put the disclaimer in the same sentence.
4.3-1: specialistsNo "specialist" in headings, schema or author bios unless the LSO has certified you. Use "practises" or "focuses on".
4.2-1 commentary: testimonialsReview quotes with emotional appeals are flagged. Keep quoted reviews factual.
4.2-2: feesIf a page states a fee, say what it covers and whether disbursements and taxes are extra.

Plain-language summary checked October 31, 2026. The LSO's Practice Management Helpline does not give advance rulings on whether marketing complies. In Quebec, the Barreau du Québec's Code of Professional Conduct of Lawyers has its own advertising section. Our law firm marketing guide has a full pre-publish checklist.

Using AI to draft that content is a separate question. The Barreau du Québec has published resources on generative AI for its members, and our guide to ChatGPT for lawyers in Canada covers the LSO side. The short version: a lawyer reviews and owns every word.

What is on an AEO checklist for a law firm?

Twenty-four items in four groups. Most firms can do the first group in an afternoon.

Access: can AI systems read your site?

  • robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Bingbot and Googlebot.
  • Key pages are indexed in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
  • Pages are not blocked by nosnippet or noindex by mistake.
  • Important text is in HTML, not only in images, PDFs or video.
  • Your sitemap is submitted to Google and Bing, and new pages are pinged with IndexNow.
  • The site loads quickly on a phone.

Answers: does each page say something worth quoting?

  • One page per practice area, per city you actually serve, in English and in French if you serve French speakers.
  • The first two sentences answer the page's main question in plain words.
  • Headings are the questions clients ask on the phone ("How long does an uncontested divorce take in Ontario?").
  • Each page has one table or list with facts, dates, steps or fees, and cites official sources such as statutes, court websites or the Law Society.
  • Each page says who handles the matter (lawyer, paralegal or both) and what you don't handle.
  • A visible "last reviewed" date and a named lawyer as author.

Entity: do AI systems know who you are?

  • Firm name, address and phone are identical on your site, Google Business Profile and directories.
  • Every lawyer has a profile page with call year, practice areas and languages.
  • Your listing in the LSO Lawyer and Paralegal Directory matches your site.
  • LegalService and Person schema match the visible page text.
  • Your firm is described the same way everywhere: same practice areas, same cities.
  • You have an About page that a stranger could check against public records.

Trust: would a careful reader believe you?

  • A steady flow of real Google reviews, with replies.
  • Mentions on sites you don't control: law association pages, local news, legal publishers, court or tribunal resources where appropriate.
  • No unprovable superlatives anywhere on the site.
  • Past-results disclaimers sit in the same sentence as any result.
  • Fees, where published, say what is included and what is extra.
  • An answer for every enquiry, day or night, because AI referrals still end in a call.

What schema should a law firm use for AI search?

Schema.org lists LegalService as a type of LocalBusiness, and Attorney as a subtype of LegalService. Google's local business structured data guide covers the fields it reads. Here is a starting point. Replace every value with your real details, and only include what is true and visible on the page.

<script type="application/ld+json">
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "LegalService",
  "@id": "https://example-law.ca/#firm",
  "name": "Example Law Professional Corporation",
  "url": "https://example-law.ca/",
  "telephone": "+1-613-555-0100",
  "address": {
    "@type": "PostalAddress",
    "streetAddress": "100 Example Street, Suite 200",
    "addressLocality": "Ottawa",
    "addressRegion": "ON",
    "postalCode": "K1P 0A0",
    "addressCountry": "CA"
  },
  "areaServed": [{"@type": "City", "name": "Ottawa"}],
  "knowsLanguage": ["en-CA", "fr-CA"],
  "openingHours": "Mo-Fr 09:00-17:00",
  "sameAs": ["https://www.linkedin.com/company/example-law"]
}
</script>

And one for each lawyer's profile page:

<script type="application/ld+json">
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "Person",
  "name": "Jane Example",
  "jobTitle": "Lawyer",
  "worksFor": {"@id": "https://example-law.ca/#firm"},
  "knowsLanguage": ["en-CA", "fr-CA"],
  "knowsAbout": ["Family law", "Separation agreements"],
  "url": "https://example-law.ca/lawyers/jane-example"
}
</script>

Two cautions. First, don't put "specialist" in schema unless the LSO has certified you; schema is published marketing too. Second, Google said in 2023 that FAQ rich results would only show for well-known, authoritative government and health sites. FAQPage markup can still describe your questions and answers, but don't add it expecting the old dropdowns in Google results.

How should a law firm's robots.txt treat AI crawlers?

Decide on purpose, not by accident. Many firm websites block AI crawlers because a security plugin or template did it by default. If you want to be cited in AI search, this is a common setup:

# Search and answer engines: allow
User-agent: Googlebot
Allow: /
User-agent: Bingbot
Allow: /
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /

# Model training: your choice
User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /

OpenAI says robots.txt changes can take about 24 hours to take effect, and Perplexity gives a similar window. Keep private areas, client portals and intake form results out of crawling entirely, whatever you decide about AI.

How do you check whether ChatGPT recommends your firm?

Test the prompts your clients would type, once a month, and write down what you see. Use a logged-out or fresh session where you can, because answers vary by person, place and wording.

Prompt to testRecord
"Family lawyer in Ottawa who speaks French"Named? Which firms? Which pages or sites cited?
"How much does an uncontested divorce cost in Ontario?"Is your fee page cited? Is the answer accurate?
"Wills and estates lawyer near Kanata"Which directories or review sites appear?
"[Your firm name] reviews"Is the description of your firm correct and current?
"Do I need a lawyer for [common matter] in Ontario?"Are official sources cited? Could your page answer it better?

Run the same prompts in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and a Google search with AI Overviews. Bing's AI Performance report, in public preview since February 2026, shows actual Copilot citations for your verified site.

If an AI describes your firm wrongly, fix the source it is likely reading: your own pages, your Google Business Profile and your directory listings. You can't edit the answer; you can edit what it learns from.

How long does AEO take for a law firm?

There is no published timeline from any AI company, and anyone who promises a date is guessing. What we can say: Google's own guidance notes that crawling can take anywhere from several days to several months, and new pages usually need time in normal search before they show up in AI answers built on it. Track three things monthly: indexed pages, citations in the Bing AI Performance report, and booked consults by source.

The firms that do best treat AEO as a writing habit: one useful, sourced answer page a week, reviewed by a lawyer, in the languages their clients speak. Pair it with the local basics in our law firm SEO guide and the channel plan in our Ottawa law firm marketing guide.

AEO for law firms: FAQ

What is AEO for law firms?

Answer engine optimization is the work of making your firm's pages the sources AI tools quote: crawlable pages, plain answers to client questions, accurate schema, consistent listings and real reviews. It builds on SEO rather than replacing it.

How do I get my law firm recommended by ChatGPT?

No one can guarantee it. Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt so your pages can appear in ChatGPT search, publish clear practice-area and question pages, keep your Google Business Profile and directory listings consistent, and earn genuine reviews. Then test your clients' prompts monthly.

Does blocking GPTBot remove my firm from ChatGPT?

Not from search answers. OpenAI treats GPTBot (training) and OAI-SearchBot (search) as separate settings. Sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, but you can block GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot.

Do I need special markup to appear in Google AI Overviews?

No. Google says there are no additional requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond normal Search: the page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Structured data should match the visible text.

Do the LSO marketing rules apply to AEO content?

Yes. Anything you publish to attract clients is marketing under Chapter 4 of the LSO Rules of Professional Conduct, so it must be true, accurate and verifiable. Avoid specialist claims unless certified and add the past-results disclaimer to any result.

Should a law firm use FAQPage schema?

It can describe your questions and answers, but Google limited FAQ rich results in 2023 to well-known, authoritative government and health websites. Use it for clarity, not for the old dropdowns in search results.

How do I know if Copilot cites my firm's website?

Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools. Its AI Performance report, in public preview since February 2026, shows how often your pages are cited in Copilot and Bing AI answers.
