49.6% of Halifax employers have one to four people on payroll. Whoever answers the phone there is usually also doing the work, so the call that comes in mid-job goes to voicemail.

Statistics Canada counts each operating location separately, and some locations are not yet assigned an industry, so the industry rows are floors rather than ceilings. Every figure links to the sources list.

The data story

What do the numbers say about Halifax's phones?

DATA

In Halifax, construction is the largest sector. It has 2,053 locations with employees, ahead of health care and social assistance at 1,860, and that includes 508 building equipment contractors. A crew on a roof or in a basement cannot answer the phone, so the first job to automate is the missed call.

Professional, scientific and technical services follow at 1,690, with 288 architecture and engineering offices and 240 law offices. These businesses sell on responsiveness, and an enquiry that waits until morning often goes to whoever replied first.

Health care is still large, with 840 offices of physicians and 194 dentists, and 935 restaurants round out the list of businesses that live on bookings and reviews. Retail trade sits at 1,695.

Nova Scotia rules

Which privacy and professional rules apply in Halifax?

RULE

PIPEDA. The Privacy Commissioner of Canada lists only Alberta, British Columbia and Quebec as having general private-sector privacy laws that replace PIPEDA, so for most Nova Scotia businesses the federal PIPEDA applies to customer information used in commercial activity. Each call script states the purpose of collection and records only what the booking needs.

Health information. Nova Scotia's Personal Health Information Act governs the collection, use and disclosure of personal health information, so clinic scheduling is separated from clinical questions, which go to staff.

CASL. Review requests and follow-up texts carry your business name and a working opt-out, with consent logged, per the CRTC's guidance.

Nova Scotia Barristers' Society. Law firms work under the Society's Code of Professional Conduct. Our intake collects contact details and the matter type only, never gives legal advice, and passes names to the lawyer for a conflict check.

Plain-language planning notes, not legal advice. Check unusual situations with your lawyer.
