Missed Call Text Back Service in Canada: How It Works, CASL Rules and Tool Prices

Quick answer

Missed call text back is a phone service that automatically texts anyone whose call you did not answer, usually within seconds, so the lead keeps talking to you instead of calling a competitor. In Canada you need a text-enabled business number, forwarding on no answer, and CASL-ready wording that names your business and offers an opt-out.

This is the service guide: how missed call text back works on Canadian phone lines, what CASL means for an automatic text, which carriers and number types can do it, and what the tools cost. If you only need the wording, our 10 Canadian missed call text back templates page has copy-paste messages by industry and a length checker. This page does not repeat them.

What is a missed call text back service?

It is a rule on your business phone line: when a call is not answered, is declined or goes to voicemail, the system sends the caller a short text from your business number. The caller can reply right away, and the reply lands in a shared inbox, on your mobile, or with an AI assistant that can answer questions and book. It turns a dead end (voicemail) into a conversation the caller can continue while sitting in their truck or on a break.

It is a recovery tool, not full coverage. It does not answer the call. For businesses where most callers will not text, such as emergency trades at 2am, pair it with an AI receptionist (see the last section).

How does missed call text back work, step by step?

  1. The call rings your normal line. Your team answers as usual. Nothing changes for answered calls.
  2. No answer after a set number of rings, or the line is busy. Either your phone system detects the miss itself (VoIP systems), or your carrier forwards the unanswered call to a service number that does (traditional lines and mobiles).
  3. The text goes out. The service sends your approved message from a text-enabled number, ideally the same number the caller dialled so the thread makes sense.
  4. The caller replies. Replies go to a shared inbox, a team mobile app or an AI assistant. Someone, or something, must answer fast. A text back that nobody reads for four hours is worse than voicemail.
  5. The lead is logged. Name, number, reason and outcome land in your CRM or a spreadsheet so you can count what it recovered.
  6. Opt-outs are honoured. If the caller replies STOP, the system records it and does not text them again.

Does missed call text back work on a Canadian landline, VoIP or toll-free number?

It depends on the number type. Texting from the number your customers already know is the goal, so check this first.

Number typeCan it send the text back? What to do
Traditional landline (Bell, Rogers, Telus business lines)Usually not by itselfForward unanswered calls to a text-enabled service number, or port the number to a VoIP provider that supports texting. Twilio notes that texts sent to Canadian landlines may be converted to a voice call by some carriers (Twilio Canada guidelines).
Business mobileYes, from a separate app number, or via forwardingUse conditional forwarding to send missed calls to the service (codes below). The text then comes from the service number, not your mobile.
VoIP number (Quo, Grasshopper, RingCentral and similar)Yes, if the plan includes texting and auto-repliesTurn on the missed call auto-reply in settings. This is the simplest setup.
Toll-free (800, 888, 877, 866, 855, 844, 833)Yes, after verificationToll-free numbers used for business texting in the US and Canada must go through toll-free verification first (Twilio).
Short code (5 or 6 digits)Not practical for text backBuilt for high-volume marketing; Twilio lists 12 to 16 weeks provisioning in Canada. A caller cannot call a short code.

Checked October 2026. Twilio also says Canadian mobile carriers "enforce strict filtering" on application-to-person texts and recommends verified toll-free numbers or short codes for best delivery. A local number sending one-to-one replies is a different pattern from bulk marketing, but keep messages plain, named and free of link shorteners.

How do you forward unanswered calls on Canadian carriers?

If your system cannot detect missed calls itself, your carrier forwards them. Rogers publishes its codes; for Bell and Telus, ask your business rep for the "call forward no answer" and "call forward busy" features on your line.

Carrier and lineForward when not answeredForward when busyTurn off
Rogers home phoneDial *92, enter the 10-digit number; forwards after 4 ringsSeparate Rogers feature*93
Rogers wireless*61*(10-digit number)#*67*(10-digit number)###61# and ##67#
Bell and TelusAsk your carrier; many mobile plans accept the same *61 formatAsk your carrierAsk your carrier

Rogers codes from its own support pages, checked October 2026. Rogers wireless also lists *62* for "not reachable". Test by calling your line from another phone and letting it ring out.

One catch: if voicemail picks up before the forward triggers, the text never fires. Shorten the voicemail delay or turn carrier voicemail off and let the service handle messages.

Is missed call text back legal in Canada under CASL?

Yes, when it is set up properly. Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL) covers commercial electronic messages, which includes texts. A text that invites someone to book or buy is likely commercial. Three parts of the Act matter for a text back. This is general information, not legal advice.

  1. Consent. You need express or implied consent to send a commercial text. One form of implied consent is an existing business relationship, which the Act defines to include an inquiry or application the person made to your business within the six months before your message (CASL, s. 10). A caller who just phoned your business line is reasonably treated as making an inquiry. That consent lasts six months, so do not add callers to a promotional list after that without asking.
  2. Exceptions. The consent rule does not apply to a message that solely provides a quote or estimate the person requested, or that solely facilitates, completes or confirms a transaction they agreed to (CASL, s. 6(6)). A text with a requested quote or a booking confirmation fits; a promo code does not.
  3. Content. Every commercial text must identify the sender, give contact information and include an unsubscribe mechanism (CASL, s. 6(2)). Unsubscribe requests must be honoured without delay and within 10 business days (s. 11). "Reply STOP to opt out" plus your business name covers this in one line.
  1. Did the person call your business line in the last six months? If no, do not send a commercial text.
  2. Is the text only answering their call (asking how you can help, giving a requested quote or confirming a booking)? Send it, with your business name and an opt-out.
  3. Does the text add offers, promo codes or newsletters? Remove them, or ask for express consent first ("Reply YES for seasonal offers").
  4. Did they reply STOP? Stop all texts and record the date.
  5. Is it more than six months since their call and you have no express consent? Do not text them again for marketing.

Keep a log of the call date and the text sent; the government's CASL guidance says senders should be ready to prove consent if asked (Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada). For definitions, see our glossary entries on implied consent and express consent.

Which missed call text back tools work in Canada, and what do they cost?

We read each provider's own pricing page in October 2026 and kept only tools that state Canadian calling or texting, or that we could confirm sell in Canada.

Checked October 2026 on each provider's own page. Quo states USD. Grasshopper and HighLevel did not name a currency on the pages we read. Prices change; confirm before you buy.

How to choose: if you already use a VoIP phone app, turn on its auto-reply first; it may be free with your plan. If your number is a traditional Bell or Rogers line and you do not want to port it, use forwarding plus a service. If you want replies handled and bookings made while you are on a job, you need an AI layer, not just a text.

How do you set up missed call text back in Canada?

  1. Pick the number. Use the number on your Google Business Profile and website so the text thread matches what callers dialled.
  2. Check texting on that number. VoIP: turn it on. Landline: forward to a text-enabled number or port. Toll-free: complete verification first.
  3. Set the trigger. Four or five rings is a common choice so staff still get a chance to answer. Add busy-line forwarding too.
  4. Write the message. Business name, one question, opt-out. Use our templates and keep it to one SMS segment.
  5. Decide who replies. Name a person for business hours and an AI or on-call phone for evenings. Set a reply target, for example 5 minutes in business hours.
  6. Exclude the wrong callers. Block texts to known personal contacts, suppliers and numbers that opted out.
  7. Test. Call from a Rogers, a Bell and a Telus mobile. Let it ring out. Reply STOP and confirm it is honoured.
  8. Measure. Each week, count missed calls, texts sent, replies and bookings from those replies. Use the missed call calculator to put a dollar figure on the gap.

Should you use missed call text back or an AI receptionist?

Use text back when most callers are happy to text, your team can reply within minutes, and the main loss is people who hang up at voicemail. Use an AI receptionist when callers need an answer now (emergencies, after-hours bookings, older callers who will not text) or when nobody is free to reply. Many businesses use both: the AI answers, and if a caller hangs up first, the text goes out. Law firms have specific rules; see missed call text back for law firms. For trades, see HVAC missed calls and AI receptionists, and for costs, what an AI receptionist costs in Canada.

Missed call text back in Canada: FAQ

What is missed call text back?

It is a phone feature that automatically sends a text to anyone whose call you did not answer, usually within seconds, so they can reply by text instead of leaving voicemail or calling a competitor.

Is missed call text back legal in Canada?

Yes, when set up properly. Under CASL, a recent call to your business can count as an inquiry that gives implied consent for six months, and every commercial text must name your business, give contact details and include an opt-out such as Reply STOP. This is general information, not legal advice.

Can I use missed call text back on a Bell or Rogers landline?

Not directly on most traditional lines. Forward unanswered calls to a text-enabled service number, or port the number to a VoIP provider that supports texting. Rogers home phone uses *92 to forward on no answer.

How much does missed call text back cost in Canada?

As checked in October 2026, Quo starts at $15 USD a user a month billed annually, Grasshopper from $14 a month, RingCentral Canada from CA$30 a user a month, and Twilio charges $0.0083 per SMS segment if you build your own.

Do I need consent to send a missed call text?

You need express or implied consent for a commercial text. A call to your business within the last six months is generally treated as an inquiry that gives implied consent. Messages that only give a requested quote or confirm a booking are exempt from the consent rule but still need your name and an opt-out.

What should a missed call text say?

Your business name, one short question such as how can we help, and an opt-out line. See the AGNT/01 missed call text back templates page for 10 Canadian examples by industry.

Is missed call text back better than an AI receptionist?

They solve different problems. Text back recovers callers who will text; an AI receptionist answers the call itself. Businesses with urgent or after-hours calls usually need the AI, with text back as a backup.
