How to report a fake Google review (and what happens next)

Quick answer

From your Business Profile, open Read reviews, select Report next to the review, pick the reason that matches Google's policy, and send. Track it in the Reviews Management Tool; evaluation typically takes several days. If Google finds no violation, you get one appeal. Report extortion with Google's merchant form, and organised fake-review campaigns to the Competition Bureau.

A one-star review appears from someone you have never served. Or three in a day, all vague, all from new accounts. It feels personal, and the instinct is to fight back in the reply box. Do not. Google has an official route for this, with a status tracker and a one-time appeal, and Canada has a regulator that wants to hear about organised fake reviews. Here is how to use both.

Canadian owners have even organised on r/SmallBusinessCanada to push back against malicious reviews, which tells you how common the problem feels. The routes below are the ones that actually lead somewhere.

What counts as a fake Google review?

Google's Maps content policy is the test that matters, because only reviews that break it can be removed. Under that policy, a review should reflect a genuine experience. Google removes:

  • Content not based on a real experience, or that does not accurately represent the business.
  • Content posted from several accounts by, or at the request of, one person.
  • Reviews posted on a competitor's business to undermine its reputation.
  • Reviews based on a conflict of interest, such as current or former employment or a competing business.
  • Reviews that were paid for, directly or in kind, or posted because of an incentive.
  • Harassment, hate speech, personal information, profanity and off-topic rants.

What does not count: a real customer's harsh but honest opinion. Google's page on reporting reviews says not to report a review just because you disagree with it, and that Google does not get involved in disputes between businesses and customers. For those, a calm public reply is the tool; our negative review reply templates can help.

How do I report a fake Google review?

These six steps follow Google's current help pages. Do them from the Google Account that manages your Business Profile.

  1. Capture the evidence. Screenshot the review, the reviewer's profile and the date, and check your bookings or sales records for that name.
  2. Match it to a policy. Identify which Google policy it breaks, such as not a genuine experience, conflict of interest or harassment. Disagreement alone does not qualify.
  3. Flag it from your profile. Go to your Business Profile, select Read reviews, select Report next to the review, choose the reason and select Send report.
  4. Track the status. Open the Reviews Management Tool to see whether the decision is pending, reviewed with no violation, or escalated.
  5. Use the one-time appeal. If Google finds no violation and you disagree, select Appeal eligible reviews, choose up to 10 reviews and submit the form with your evidence.
  6. Escalate the special cases. Use the merchant extortion form for demands for money, report the reviewer's profile in the Maps app, and report organised campaigns to the Competition Bureau.

The table shows which official route fits which situation, so you do not waste your one appeal on the wrong problem.

How long does Google take to remove a reported review?

Google says review evaluation typically takes several days. You can check progress in the Reviews Management Tool, which shows one of three statuses: Decision pending, Report reviewed with no policy violation, or Escalated, check your email for updates. There is no promise of removal, and reporting the same review over and over does not speed things up. While you wait, a short, factual reply is your best public signal. Something like: "We have no record of a visit under this name. If we have missed something, please call us at [number] so we can look into it." For problems the tools do not cover, see how to contact Google Business Profile support from Canada.

What if Google says the review does not violate policy?

You get one appeal. In the Reviews Management Tool, choose the option to check the status of a review you reported and see appeal options, then select Appeal eligible reviews. Google lets you select up to 10 reviews, fill in the form and submit. If the appeal succeeds, the review is removed. If not, it stays live and the status reads Escalated, check your email for updates.

Because there is only one appeal per review, make it count. Explain which specific policy the review breaks, not that it is unfair. Point to evidence: no booking or sale under that name, an account with no other history, the same wording as other reviews posted the same day, or a link to a competitor. Our guide on how to remove a Google review under the 2026 policy has more on which arguments work.

What should I do about a review extortion scam?

Google describes a specific pattern: a sudden increase in 1-star and 2-star reviews, followed by someone demanding money, goods or services to remove them. Its extortion guidance is blunt: do not engage with or pay them, do not try to resolve it yourself by offering money or services, and gather all evidence immediately. Then use the merchant extortion report form with screenshots of the demands showing dates, times and sender details, links to each suspicious review, and when the wave started. Google says it investigates and notifies you of the result, without sharing specific details. If you were threatened, you can also contact your local police.

Can I report fake reviews to the Competition Bureau of Canada?

Yes. The Competition Bureau's consumer alert Five-star fake out says anyone who believes they have found fake online reviews can report them to the Bureau, and links to its online complaint form. The Bureau's 2024 notice on employee reviews adds that anyone who writes or permits reviews that give a false or misleading impression could be liable under the Competition Act, and asks people aware of an organised effort to boost a company's ratings or lower a competitor's to report it.

Be realistic about what this does. The Bureau is a law enforcement agency looking at patterns and companies, not a review removal service, and a complaint will not take a review off your profile. It is the right move when you can show a competitor or a reputation firm running a campaign, and it works best alongside the Google report, not instead of it.

What should you not do about a fake review?

  • Do not post a reply that accuses or names the reviewer. Google's policy treats unsubstantiated allegations and personal information as violations, and future customers read your tone.
  • Do not flood the profile with friendly reviews. Reviews from staff, family or people you paid are fake engagement themselves and can bring restrictions on your own profile.
  • Do not pay a removal service that promises results. Only Google or the reviewer can remove a review, and the official route is free. Our note on reviews disappearing in 2026 covers these services.
  • Do not create a new profile to escape the reviews. It can lead to duplicate problems, and if a review is missing for other reasons, see Google reviews not showing up.
  • Do not ignore it. Report it, reply once calmly, and keep asking real customers for reviews so one fake one carries less weight. Our guide to getting more Google reviews for free shows a routine.
