You open your profile and the count is lower than yesterday. Or a customer tells you they left five stars and you cannot find it. Or the opposite: a run of one-star reviews from accounts that have never been to your shop, and a message offering to make them go away for a fee. All three are happening to Canadian businesses in 2026, and they have different fixes.
This guide uses only Google's own published help pages for how review removal works, fetched October 24, 2026, plus what Canadian owners are reporting on r/SmallBusinessCanada and r/GoogleMyBusiness. For the wider enforcement picture, read our Google Business Profile crackdown 2026 page.
Why are my Google reviews disappearing in 2026?
Google's help page on missing or delayed reviews lists the reasons it will admit to. Reviews are checked against policy before they appear, which can delay them for days. Reviews are removed when they break the content policies, most often for spam or inappropriate content. Reviews from merged profiles can take a few days to combine. Customers on old versions of the Maps app sometimes fail to post. And Google may temporarily disable reviews for certain profiles or whole categories "to protect business owners". A separate page confirms that Google uses automated spam detection and that the system "may also mistakenly remove legitimate reviews".
Put plainly: if your reviews dropped, the likeliest cause is the filter, the second likeliest is a policy decision, and the least likely is a person at Google reading your profile. Reviews that read like marketing copy, arrive in a burst, come from brand-new accounts, mention a discount, or were posted from the same Wi-Fi as your front desk are the ones the filter removes first.
Is Google deleting reviews on purpose in 2026?
Not at random, but enforcement is heavier than it was. Google's restrictions for policy violations page says that when a business is found to have violated the fake engagement policy, Google can block new reviews for a set period, unpublish existing reviews for a set period, and show a public warning that fake reviews were removed. Owners are told by email. Google also says reviews are sometimes removed after a suspended profile is reinstated, and asks you to contact support when that happens.
Two things make 2026 different in Canada. The Competition Bureau has treated undisclosed employee reviews and fake reviews as a competition law problem, and Canadian owners have organised on r/SmallBusinessCanada to push back on malicious review campaigns. Both raise the stakes for anyone tempted to buy their way out.
| Situation | What Google publishes | Where to act |
|---|---|---|
| Review missing, no email from Google | Policy check can delay for days; filter may have removed it; older apps can fail to post | Wait a few days, then contact support if the review was genuine |
| Review removed for policy | "Reviews removed for policy violations won't be restored" | No path; ask the customer to write a fresh, honest review |
| Legitimate review removed by the spam filter | System "may mistakenly remove legitimate reviews"; contact support | Support form, with the customer's name and approximate date |
| Fake or abusive review on your profile | Report it; evaluation "typically takes several days"; one appeal allowed | Reviews Management Tool |
| Burst of 1-star reviews plus a demand for money | Extortion is "a serious policy violation"; do not pay | Merchant extortion report form |
| Your profile restricted for fake engagement | New reviews blocked or existing ones unpublished for a set period; a warning may show | Restriction appeal form |
| Wrong name, phone or website on a listing | Business Redressal form covers name, phone and URL fraud only | Business Redressal Complaint Form |
| Appeal limit per batch | Up to 10 reviews per appeal submission | Reviews Management Tool |

Can you get a deleted Google review back?
It depends on why it went. If Google removed it for a policy violation, the answer on its own help page is no: those reviews are not restored. If a genuine review was caught by the spam filter, Google's page says to contact support, and owners do get these back when they can give the reviewer's display name and an approximate date. If a review disappeared after your profile was reinstated from a suspension, Google specifically asks you to contact support.
What does not work: asking the customer to repost the same text (the filter will usually catch it again), posting it yourself from their account, or paying a third party who promises restoration. The only clean path for a lost genuine review is a new, honest review written by the customer in their own words, ideally a week or more later.
How do I report a fake Google review and appeal the decision?
The Canadian advice that keeps coming up on r/SmallBusinessCanada is "before paying anyone, flag each one again right under the review". It matches Google's process. Here is the full sequence from Google's reporting page.
- Check the filter first. Open the Reviews Management Tool, confirm the account that owns the profile, and look at the status of anything you reported before: decision pending, no violation found, or escalated.
- Flag from the profile. In your Business Profile select Read reviews, choose Report next to the review, pick the reason (spam, off topic, conflict of interest, harassment and so on) and send. Pick the reason that matches a written policy, not the one that feels worst.
- Flag again through the tool. In the Reviews Management Tool choose Report a new review for removal. Google says evaluation typically takes several days. Owners report that a second flag with a sharper reason sometimes succeeds where the first did not.
- Appeal once. If the status says no policy violation, choose Check the status of a review I reported previously, then Appeal eligible reviews. You can include up to 10 reviews per appeal. Add facts in the form: no record of the person as a customer, the date they claim, screenshots of related posts.
- Report the account, not just the review. In the Maps app, tap the reviewer's name, then More, then Report. A profile that only posts one-star reviews across a city is a stronger case than a single review.
- If someone asks for money, use the extortion form. Google's extortion scam page is explicit: do not engage or pay, gather screenshots showing date, time and sender, link every suspicious review, and file the merchant extortion report.
- Reply publicly, once, calmly. A short owner response that states you have no record of the visit and invites the person to contact you is read by future customers. Do not argue in the thread.
- Keep a log. Date flagged, reason, tool status, appeal date. If you later reach a support agent, this log is what moves the case.
One clarification, because the name confuses people: the Business Redressal Complaint Form is for fraudulent names, phone numbers and website URLs on Maps listings. Google states it will not review complaints about anything else through that form, and you will not get status updates. It is the right tool when a competitor or lead-gen reseller has hijacked your listing details, not for reviews.
Are Google review removal services legit?
Treat them as a trap until proven otherwise. Every action a removal service can take on your behalf is one you can take yourself for free with the steps above; there is no back door to Google's moderation team. The services that do remove reviews mostly do it by filing the same reports repeatedly, which you can do. The ones that promise guaranteed removal, charge per review, or ask for your Google login are the ones to avoid: sharing your login hands over your whole profile, and a wave of manufactured flags or manufactured positives is exactly the fake engagement behaviour that triggers the restrictions above.
The Ontario owner who started the r/SmallBusinessCanada thread about removal services got the same advice from almost everyone who replied: flag again, appeal, document, and spend the money on getting more real reviews instead. Google's own help centre does not list any approved removal partners.
How do you rebuild review velocity safely?
Lost reviews hurt less when new ones arrive every week. The rules are short. Google's content policy forbids paying for reviews, offering discounts for them, and selectively asking only happy customers (review gating). In Canada, any email or text you send to ask for a review is a commercial electronic message under CASL, so you need consent, your business name and contact details, and a working unsubscribe. A customer who just bought from you gives you implied consent for up to two years; put the request inside that window and keep it to one message plus one reminder.
Two templates that pass both tests. Text, kept to a single SMS segment of 160 characters: "Hi [name], thanks for choosing [business] today. If you have a minute, a Google review helps us a lot: [short link]. Reply STOP to opt out. [Business], [phone]." Email subject "How did we do, [name]?" with two sentences, the same link, your address and an unsubscribe line. Use Google's own review link and QR code so the customer lands on the form in one tap.
Then make the ask automatic. Send it the same day, from the system you already use, to every customer, not just the happy ones. The review system we run for Ottawa clients does exactly this, and our missed call text back templates show the CASL wording in more detail. A profile that gains a few honest reviews a week recovers from a filter sweep in a month. A profile that buys ten in a day gets the warning label.
Disappearing Google reviews: FAQ
Why did my Google reviews disappear in 2026?
The common causes Google publishes are automated spam detection, content policy removals, delays while new reviews are checked, merges between profiles, and customers posting from outdated Maps apps. Google also says the filter can mistakenly remove legitimate reviews.
Can Google restore a review it removed?
If the review broke a policy, Google says it will not be restored. If a genuine review was removed by the spam filter, or reviews vanished after a suspension was lifted, Google asks you to contact support, and those are sometimes restored.
How long does Google take to review a flagged review?
Google says evaluation typically takes several days. You can watch the status in the Reviews Management Tool, where it shows as decision pending, no policy violation, or escalated.
How many times can I appeal a Google review decision?
Once per review. After a report comes back as no policy violation, the Reviews Management Tool allows a one-time appeal, and you can include up to 10 reviews in a single appeal submission.
Should I pay a Google review removal service?
No. Every step they can take is available to you for free through Google's own tools, there is no private channel to Google's moderators, and services that ask for your login or guarantee removal expose your profile to fake engagement restrictions.
What is the Business Redressal Complaint Form for?
It is for reporting fraudulent business names, phone numbers or website URLs on Google Maps listings. Google states it will not act on other complaints through that form and does not send status updates, so it is not a review removal path.
Is it legal to text customers for Google reviews in Canada?
Yes, within CASL. You need consent (a recent purchase gives implied consent for up to two years), your business name and contact details in the message, and a working opt-out such as reply STOP.
What should I do if someone demands money to remove bad reviews?
Do not pay or negotiate. Screenshot every message with date, time and sender, link each suspicious review, and submit Google's merchant extortion report form, which Google treats as a serious policy violation.
