AI Receptionist: $50 Tool vs $1,000 Service in Canada (2026)

Quick answer

Both are real. A $49 to $99 CAD self-serve tool (Voxara, Aria, Dialzara) answers, takes messages and books into one calendar, with minute caps and overage fees. A $1,000 a month managed service adds setup, scripts, integrations, human handoff and monthly tuning. Simple bookings and low volume: buy the tool. Many call types or systems to connect: buy the service.

A post in r/SmallBusinessCanada told BC owners not to get fleeced paying $1,000 a month for an AI receptionist they could get for $50. The thread hit a nerve because both numbers are real. The mistake is treating them as the same product at two prices.

This page shows what you get at each level using prices published on vendor sites on October 24, 2026, where the gap comes from, and a decision table. It pairs with our wider AI receptionist pricing guide for Canada.

What does a $50 to $100 a month AI receptionist actually do?

At this price you are buying software you configure yourself, or a templated setup. Published entry plans:

  • Voxara (Canada, CAD): Solo plan $49 a month with 100 minutes, $0.45 a minute after that, one provider and one service type, booking by voice into your calendar, template setup. The $99 Starter plan carries 300 minutes and a custom setup from a discovery call.
  • Aria (Montreal, CAD): Starter $59 a month with up to 150 voice minutes, English and French, booking into Google Calendar, Calendly or Acuity, message taking. Call transfer only arrives on the $189 Pro plan.
  • Dialzara (US, USD): Business Lite $29 a month with 60 minutes and $0.48 a minute overage, a self-editable prompt and blind transfer. Warm transfer starts at the $99 Pro plan.
  • Rosie (US, USD): Professional $49 a month for solo owners; live call transfer is a feature of the $149 Scale plan.
  • Goodcall (US, USD): Starter $79 a month for 100 unique callers, then 79 cents per extra caller, no per-minute charges.

What these share: one calendar, one or two appointment types, a message or booking as the outcome, a monthly cap, and you as the person who writes the greeting, tests the calls and reads the logs. That is a fair deal for a solo trade or a one-chair clinic, and exactly where the Reddit poster was right.

What does a $1,000 a month managed service add?

The managed layer is labour, not a better robot. Several vendors publish both products side by side, which makes the difference easy to see. Dialzara lists self-serve plans from $29 and a "Done for You" tier starting at $1,500 a month. Smith.ai lists a self-setup AI plan at $150 a month and a built-and-run Enterprise plan from $500. Voxara's $597 Pro plan adds CRM integration, outbound reminder calls, weekly performance reviews and an account manager on top of the $49 Solo features.

Across those pages, the paid-for layer is consistently:

  1. Setup and scripts. Someone maps every call type you get (new client, existing client, emergency, vendor, wrong number) and writes what the agent says and asks for each.
  2. Integrations. Bookings land in the system you already use (practice management, CRM, dispatch software) rather than a Google Sheet.
  3. Human handoff rules. Who gets transferred, when, to which number, and what happens when nobody picks up. Conflict screening for law firms sits here too; the AI collects the names and a person decides.
  4. Monitoring. A human listens to a sample of calls every week and fixes the misses.
  5. Monthly tuning and reporting. New services, new hours, new staff, seasonal scripts, and a report that shows calls answered, booked and transferred.

If you would do all five yourself and enjoy it, you do not need to pay for them. If a mishandled call can cost you a $1,000 client, paying someone to prevent it is a different calculation. That is the honest version of both sides of the thread.

What is the per-minute trap?

Cheap plans are cheap because the minute cap is small. The trap is a busy month. Take Voxara's own published numbers: the $49 Solo plan carries 100 minutes at $0.45 a minute after that. A month with 250 minutes of calls costs $49 plus 150 times $0.45, which is $67.50 in overage, so $116.50 in total. The $99 Starter plan with 300 minutes would have been cheaper. Dialzara's $29 Lite plan with 60 minutes and $0.48 a minute overage behaves the same way: 200 minutes costs $29 plus $67.20, or $96.20, almost the $99 Pro plan.

Aria handles the cap differently. When the included minutes are used, the agent pauses until the next billing cycle unless you buy a minute pack or switch on auto top-up with a spending cap. A pause means unanswered calls, which is the problem you bought the tool to fix.

Human services meter too. LEX Reception rounds every interaction up to the nearest minute. Intercon Messaging bills per minute instead of a flat monthly rate. Smith.ai's live receptionist plans charge per call, with overage of $11.50 a call above the 30-call Starter plan. None of this is hidden. The trap is not reading the pricing page against your real call volume. Pull three months of call logs, count calls and average length, and price the plan that covers your busiest month.

Who should buy the tool, and who should buy the service?

Your situation$50 to $100 toolManaged service
Under about 100 calls a month, mostly simple bookingsYesUsually not needed
One calendar, one or two appointment typesYesNot needed
Bookings must land in practice or job software, not a sheetCheck the integrations list firstYes
Calls must be screened and transferred (law, urgent trades, medical)Only on mid tiers (Aria Pro, Dialzara Pro, Rosie Scale)Yes, with rules and fallbacks
English and French callersAria yes; others varyYes, scripted both ways
You will review calls weekly and edit the scripts yourselfYesNot needed
You want one report a month and someone else fixing missesNoYes
Phone is one of several leaks (website, follow-up, reviews)PartialYes, if the service runs those too

A quick self-test: list the last ten calls you missed and what each caller wanted. If eight wanted a booking or your hours, the tool wins. If half needed judgement, a transfer or a follow-up, you are in managed territory. For the Canadian live-answering alternative, see live answering services in Canada, and use the hire vs AI calculator to compare against a human receptionist, whose median wage in Canada is $21.00 an hour on Job Bank data.

When is the $50 tool enough?

Often. If you are a solo electrician, a one-room RMT clinic, a dog groomer or a tutor, a $49 to $99 plan that answers, books into Google Calendar and texts you a summary will catch most of what voicemail loses. Call it ten times yourself with the questions your customers really ask, read the transcripts for a week, and move up one tier when you hit the cap twice rather than paying overage.

Where it stops being enough: when callers hang up on it (see do callers hang up on AI receptionists), when bookings need to land in software the tool cannot reach, when you need French and English handled properly, or when nobody has read the call log in a month. At that point you are not paying $1,000 for a robot. You are paying for the person who runs it.

AGNT/01 sits on the managed side: we set up and run the AI front desk, website, follow-up and reviews as one system and report the return monthly. Fees are on the published pricing page, and the free audit will tell you honestly if a $59 tool is all you need.

$50 tool vs $1,000 service: FAQ

Why do AI receptionists cost $50 or $1,000 a month?

The $50 price buys self-serve software with a minute cap that you configure and monitor yourself. The $1,000 price buys people: setup, call scripts, integrations with your booking or practice software, human handoff rules, weekly call review and monthly tuning. Several vendors publish both tiers on the same page.

Is a $50 AI receptionist good enough for a small business in Canada?

For a solo operator with simple bookings, one calendar and under roughly 100 calls a month, usually yes. Voxara starts at $49 CAD and Aria at $59 CAD. It stops being enough when calls need screening, transfers or software the tool cannot reach.

What is the per-minute trap with AI receptionists?

Entry plans include a small number of minutes and bill overage per minute. On Voxara's published Solo plan, 250 minutes costs $116.50 ($49 plus 150 minutes at $0.45), more than the $99 plan with 300 minutes. Price your busiest month, not your average.

Do cheap AI receptionists transfer calls to a human?

Not always on the entry plan. Aria adds direct call transfer on its $189 Pro plan, Dialzara includes blind transfer on Lite and warm transfer from Pro, and Rosie lists live transfer on its $149 Scale plan. Check the plan, not the homepage.

Are AI receptionist prices in Canada in CAD or USD?

Voxara and Aria publish Canadian dollar prices. Dialzara, Rosie, Goodcall, Smith.ai and My AI Front Desk are US companies and list US dollar prices, so convert before comparing.

What does a managed AI receptionist service include that a tool does not?

Call-type mapping and scripts, integrations into your existing software, transfer and escalation rules, weekly monitoring of real calls, monthly script updates and a report. The labour is the product.

Can I start with a $50 tool and move to a managed service later?

Yes. Keep your own phone number and forward it to the tool so you can redirect it later, export call logs monthly, and move up when you hit the minute cap twice or calls start needing judgement rather than a booking.
