AI receptionist vs voicemail: what each costs you, with a break-even calculator.

A plain comparison for Canadian local service businesses, plus a calculator that runs on your own call numbers.

Voicemail costs nothing, so it feels free. It is not. Every caller who hangs up instead of leaving a message, and every message you return too late, is a job that went to the next name on Google. Here is how the two compare, and a calculator for your own numbers.

Quick answer

An AI receptionist answers every call, asks the qualifying questions and books the job while the caller is still on the line. Voicemail waits for the caller to leave a message and for you to call back. If you miss calls you would have won, the AI usually pays for itself; the calculator below shows your break-even.

How much does voicemail cost me? A break-even calculator

Voicemail vs AI receptionist break-even

Every number below is an editable assumption, not a statistic. Replace the defaults with figures from your own call log. Nothing is saved or sent.

Press Calculate.
Method: voicemail jobs = calls x message share x return-and-book share. AI jobs = calls x AI booking share. Difference x job value is compared with the monthly plan converted to CAD. Setup fees are not included.

When is voicemail enough?

If you miss only a handful of calls a month, your callers are mostly existing clients who are happy to wait, and your average job is small, voicemail with a fast callback is fine. The AI case gets stronger as missed calls rise, as job value rises, and as more of your enquiries arrive after hours. Start from your own phone log, not from a generic average.

Can I improve voicemail before paying for anything?

Yes. Record a greeting that names the business, says when you call back and asks for the service, address and best number. Turn on voicemail transcription so messages reach you by text, and set a rule to call back inside an hour. Our notes on lead response time and a missed call text back show the cheapest first step. For the full cost picture, see AI receptionist cost in Canada and the missed call calculator.

Where does a human still beat both?

Complex or emotional calls, negotiations and anything urgent. A good setup uses AI for the first answer and routes those calls to a person. Recorded calls need a spoken notice, covered in our call recording consent guide.

AI receptionist vs voicemail: FAQ

Is an AI receptionist better than voicemail?

For capturing new customers, usually yes, because the caller talks to something that can answer, qualify and book in the moment. Voicemail only works if the caller chooses to leave a message and you call back fast. Voicemail is free, so the real question is what the lost calls cost you.

What does an AI receptionist cost compared with voicemail?

Voicemail is included with most phone plans. AGNT/01 publishes four plans: Starter at $799 setup plus $297 a month, Foundation at $1,999 plus $1,197 a month, Growth at $3,999 plus $1,997 a month, and Enterprise from $10,999, all in USD.

Do callers leave voicemails?

Some do and many do not. Your own call log is the best source: compare calls that went to voicemail with the messages actually left. The calculator on this page lets you enter that share as an editable assumption instead of using a made-up statistic.

Can an AI receptionist replace voicemail completely?

It can take over the first answer, but keep a human path. Route urgent or complex calls to a person, and leave a voicemail or callback option for callers who prefer it.

Does an AI receptionist need to tell callers it is recording?

If calls are recorded, say so at the start of the call. Our call recording consent guide covers the wording to use and the Canadian points to check with your own counsel.
