The data story

What do the numbers say about St. John's phones?

DATA

The five largest sectors sit close together. Construction leads at 918 locations, then health care and social assistance at 877, retail trade at 857, professional, scientific and technical services at 782 and other services at 772. No single sector dominates, so there is no one script that fits the whole city.

Two counts are worth noting. There are 375 physician offices against 90 dentists, and 198 architecture and engineering offices, more than the 125 law offices.

52.8% of locations have one to four employees and 23.0% have ten to forty-nine.

Newfoundland and Labrador rules

Which privacy and professional rules apply in St. John's?

RULE

PIPEDA. The Privacy Commissioner of Canada says only Alberta, British Columbia and Quebec have general private-sector laws that apply instead of PIPEDA. For most St. John's businesses the federal PIPEDA is therefore the baseline for customer information.

Personal Health Information Act. The Commissioner's list also shows Newfoundland and Labrador as one of four provinces with a health information law treated as substantially similar to PIPEDA, for health information only. The provincial Information and Privacy Commissioner's page on custodians says private-practice doctors, dentists, pharmacists and psychologists can be custodians under the Act. A receptionist in a clinic books and reminds, and passes clinical questions to staff.

CASL. Texts name your business, include an opt-out and log consent, per the CRTC. Callers are told when a call is recorded, as the Commissioner's guidance advises.

Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador. Lawyers work under the Society's Code of Professional Conduct. Intake gives no legal advice and collects only what a conflict check needs.

Plain-language planning notes, not legal advice. Check unusual situations with your lawyer.

Questions

St. John's owners ask us.

FAQS

Does AGNT/01 have an office in St. John's?

01
No. AGNT/01 is based in Ottawa and serves St. John's remotely over video and phone. We book calls in Newfoundland time and test every system on your real phone lines before launch.

Which privacy law covers an AI receptionist in St. John's?

02
For most businesses it is the federal PIPEDA, because Newfoundland and Labrador is not one of the three provinces whose general private-sector laws replace it. Health custodians also follow the provincial Personal Health Information Act, and texts fall under CASL.

Can a St. John's clinic use an AI receptionist?

03
Yes, for scheduling. The receptionist books, confirms and reschedules, and passes clinical questions to staff. Whether a practice is a custodian under the Personal Health Information Act is a question for the practice and its lawyer.

What should a St. John's business automate first?

04
It depends on the sector. Construction leads the CMA at 918 locations, so missed-call text back is the usual first build, followed by booking for the 877 health care locations.

Do you work with businesses in Mount Pearl and Paradise?

05
Yes. Mount Pearl has 1,004 locations with employees and Paradise 612, both inside the CMA. The remote build is the same wherever you are.

How much does AI consulting cost for a St. John's small business?

06
There is one published price list for every Canadian city, and no travel costs because nothing is done on site. Check agntone.ca/#pricing for current figures.

How do we get started?

07
