SEO quotes in Canada range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand a month, and two quotes at the same price can buy very different work. This page sets out what Canadian agencies and freelancers publish today, what each price tier should include, and what to do for free before you sign anything.
How much does SEO cost per month in Canada?
Curve Communications, a Canadian agency, sets out four bands in its 2026 budgeting guide: $500 to $1,000 a month for basic local support, $1,000 to $2,500 for a focused local growth plan, $2,500 to $5,000 for competitive markets or several services, and $5,000 or more for multiple locations. Marvel Marketing in Calgary puts a credible single-location local SEO programme at $1,200 to $3,000 a month and province-wide campaigns at $2,000 to $6,000.
Published price lists are rarer. ThinkProfits, a Canadian SEO agency, lists monthly plans at $995, $1,895 and $3,495 with one-time setup fees of $1,680, $1,950 and $3,040 and no long-term contract. Wisevu, another Canadian agency, writes that SEO services typically start at $2,500 CAD a month.

What do you get at each SEO price tier?
ThinkProfits is useful here because it publishes deliverables next to prices. Its entry plan covers up to 5 pages of on-page optimization and 1 blog article a month; the middle plan doubles that to up to 10 pages and 2 articles; the top plan covers up to 20 pages. Digitad in Montreal shows a similar pattern, with its packages measured in blog posts and hours of work per month.
That is the honest way to read any SEO quote: count the units of work. Pages improved, articles written, technical hours, links earned, and how results are reported. If a quote cannot tell you the units, you cannot compare it to another one. A good report also shows calls, forms and bookings from search, not only rankings and traffic.
How much do SEO freelancers charge compared with agencies?
The largest public pricing survey is from Ahrefs, which polled 439 SEO providers (figures in US dollars, not Canada only). It found agencies charge an average of $3,209 a month and freelancers $1,348, with local SEO averaging $1,557 a month. The average hourly rate was $111, and 78.2% of providers bill on a monthly retainer. Looking at the US and Canada together, 79.1% charge at least $1,001 a month.
Clutch, which compiles prices from verified client reviews, puts the average SEO agency engagement at $3,199.19 a month over a typical 12 months, and lists Canadian SEO firms at $100 to $149 an hour (US dollars). A freelancer is usually the better buy for a single location with a clear list of fixes. An agency earns its premium when you need content, technical work and link earning at the same time.
What SEO can a small business do for free first?
A popular r/canadasmallbusiness post put it bluntly: before you pay anyone for local SEO, do the free stuff. It is also where any good agency would start, so you save the first month or two of fees.
- Claim and complete your Google Business Profile: the most specific primary category, true hours, services, photos and your real name, address and phone. Our Google Business Profile guide for Canada walks through it.
- Set up Google Search Console so you can see which searches already show your site and which pages have errors.
- Ask every happy customer for a review, every week. See how to get more Google reviews.
- Give each service its own page that names the areas you serve, then work through the local SEO checklist.
- Answer the phone. Rankings that produce calls nobody picks up are wasted spend.
Is $500 a month enough for SEO?
Sometimes, for a single-location business in a quiet market with the free basics already done. Curve treats $500 to $1,000 as basic support, and in the Ahrefs survey 23% of providers charge $500 to $1,000 a month. Marvel Marketing warns owners to be cautious of packages below $800 a month that promise meaningful results, because the hours simply are not there.
A fair test for a low-priced plan: ask for the exact list of work for month one and month three. If it is mostly reporting and "monitoring", the money is better spent on a one-time fix list from a freelancer and your own weekly review requests.
How long do you have to pay for SEO before it works?
Expect months, not weeks, and match the contract to that reality. Clutch reports a typical SEO engagement of 12 months. Contract terms vary a lot in Canada: ThinkProfits advertises no long-term contracts, while Digitad offers 12-month, 6-month or no-commitment options. Ask what you own if you leave: content, accounts and tracking should stay with you.
How much should a small business budget for SEO?
Curve's rule of thumb is 1% to 3% of annual revenue: a business earning $500,000 a year might invest $500 to $1,250 a month, and one earning $1 million might invest $1,000 to $2,500. Clutch notes that many marketers recommend spending 7% to 10% of revenue on all digital marketing, with SEO as only part of it.
