Search "cost of hiring a marketing agency" and you get a hundred posts that say "it depends." It does depend, but Canadian agencies publish more numbers than they used to. We pulled the figures below from Clutch, helloDarwin and three Canadian agency price pages on October 23, 2026, so you can see what the market charges before you take a sales call.
This guide covers the typical ranges in Canadian dollars, what sits outside the retainer, how an AI growth system compares, and the cases where an agency is still the right call.

Checked October 2026. Clutch displays rates in US dollars; the agency pages quote Canadian dollars. Figures change, so follow the links before you budget.
Three patterns stand out. First, a single service such as SEO from an established Canadian agency starts near $1,000 a month and climbs to about $5,000 at the top tier. Second, "full service" for a small business usually means $2,500 to $5,000 a month in management fees, with advertising spend on top. Third, setup is often billed separately: ThinkProfits lists one-time fees of $1,680 to $3,800 depending on the plan.
What does the retainer leave out?
- Ad spend. Management fees pay for the agency's time. The money paid to Google or Meta is separate. Marvel Marketing's 2026 guide puts a typical Alberta starting budget at $1,500 to $3,000 a month in spend plus $1,000 to $2,000 in management.
- Setup and onboarding. Audits, tracking setup and strategy decks are often a one-time line. Ask whether the first invoice is bigger than the rest.
- Sales tax. HST or GST applies to the fees. Marvel also notes that Google charges GST on ad spend billed to Canadian accounts.
- Contract length. Digitad offers 12-month, 6-month and no-commitment options. ThinkProfits advertises no long-term contracts. The monthly price often depends on which one you pick.
- Your own hours. Approvals, content review and reporting calls add up. A retainer that needs four hours of your week is not a hands-off cost.
Is an AI growth system cheaper than a marketing agency?
Usually, but it is the wrong first question. An agency retainer buys attention: more people seeing your business through search, ads and content. An AI growth system buys conversion: every call answered, every lead followed up, every happy customer asked for a review, and a website built to book. If your phone already rings and the leads leak out, buying more attention makes the leak bigger.
| Question | Marketing agency retainer | AI growth system |
|---|---|---|
| What you pay for | People's hours: strategy, content, ads, reporting | Software that runs 24/7 plus a small team that manages it |
| Problem it solves | Not enough people find you | People find you and you lose them at the phone, the form or the follow-up |
| Typical cost structure | Monthly fee, setup fee, ad spend, tax | One monthly fee; at AGNT/01 there is no setup fee (see published pricing) |
| Time to effect | SEO and content build over months; ads can move in weeks | Answering and follow-up change the day they go live |
| How it is measured | Traffic, rankings, leads, cost per lead | Calls answered, jobs booked, reviews gained, reported monthly |
| Who does the work | Account manager plus specialists | AI receptionist, follow-up and review agents, with a human owner of the system |
Our own plans run the front office and the website as one system for a flat monthly fee. We do not print the price here because it is changing; see published pricing. The AI employees vs marketing agency comparison has a 12-month cost model you can edit, and the hire vs AI calculator does the same for a receptionist. For the software side on its own, see what an AI receptionist costs in Canada.
When is a marketing agency the better choice?
An honest list, because we lose this comparison sometimes:
- You already answer every call and reply to every lead within minutes, and your reviews are current. Your leak is attention, not conversion.
- You spend several thousand dollars a month on ads. Paid media needs daily hands and creative testing that an automation system does not replace.
- You compete in several cities or provinces and need steady content, link building and French-language pages at scale.
- You need a brand: naming, design, video, a launch campaign.
- You have a marketing lead in-house who needs extra hands, not a system.
If two or more of those are true, hire an agency and hold it to booked work, not impressions. If none are, fix the front office first. Our guide to choosing an AI automation agency in Canada lists the questions to ask either kind of provider.
How do you compare two quotes fairly?
- Put everything in monthly Canadian dollars: fee, setup spread over 12 months, ad spend, tax, and any tools you must buy yourself.
- Ask what is measured and how often. Jobs booked beats impressions.
- Ask who does the work. A senior rate buys a senior person for a few hours, or a junior for many.
- Count your missed calls and unanswered forms first with the missed call calculator. If that number is bigger than the retainer, start there, and set up a missed-call text back this week.
- Check the exit. No-commitment plans can cost more per month, but they let you stop when the return is not there.

Cost of hiring a marketing agency: FAQ
How much does a marketing agency cost per month in Canada?
Published Canadian figures in October 2026 ran from about $1,000 a month for an entry SEO plan to $5,000 or more a month for a full-service retainer. Advertising spend, setup fees and sales tax are extra.
What is the average hourly rate for a marketing agency in Canada?
Agencies listed on Clutch as serving Canadian small businesses show hourly rates between $50 and $199. Toronto agencies listed on helloDarwin show $50 to $200 an hour.
Do marketing agencies charge a setup fee?
Many do. ThinkProfits, for example, lists one-time setup fees from $1,680 to $3,800 on top of its monthly SEO plans. Always ask whether the first invoice is larger than the rest.
Is a marketing agency worth it for a small business?
It is worth it when you already answer calls and follow up leads quickly, have a clear budget for ad spend, and can measure booked work rather than clicks. If leads leak at the phone or the form, fix that first.
Is an AI growth system cheaper than a marketing agency?
Usually, because software replaces hours of human work, but it solves a different problem: converting the demand you already have. Compare the two only after you know where your leads leak.
Can I use a marketing agency and an AI system together?
Yes. Many businesses run an AI front office to capture every lead and hire an agency for campaigns once the capture rate is fixed.
What does AGNT/01 charge?
We publish our plans in the pricing section of our home page. There is no setup fee, and plans continue month to month after the initial term.
