Receptionist salary in Canada (2026) vs AI receptionist cost

Quick answer

Receptionists in Canada earn a median of $21.00 an hour, usually between $16.25 and $29.00, according to Job Bank. Full-time, that is about $43,680 a year before employer CPP, EI, vacation and benefits. Published AI receptionist plans start around $49 to $59 CAD a month, but they only cover the phone, not the front desk.

Search "AI receptionist" plus any Canadian city and Google suggests "receptionist salary Toronto", "receptionist salary Ontario" or "receptionist salary Calgary" in the same breath. Owners are pricing both options at once. This page gives you the official wage data by province, the employer costs that sit on top of the wage, and a side-by-side with published answering service and AI receptionist prices.

Every wage figure comes from the Government of Canada's Job Bank, which draws on Statistics Canada's Labour Force Survey. Payroll rates come from the Canada Revenue Agency. We fetched both on October 28, 2026.

How much does a receptionist make in Canada?

Job Bank reports that receptionists in Canada (NOC 14101) usually earn between $16.25 and $29.00 an hour, with a median of $21.00. The figures were updated on November 19, 2025 and use a 2023 to 2024 reference period, so 2026 offers in big cities often sit higher. At 2,080 paid hours a year (40 hours a week, our assumption), the national median works out to about $43,680.

Two other data points help. In Ontario, the general minimum wage rose to $17.95 an hour on October 1, 2026, which now equals the low end of Job Bank's Ontario receptionist range. And Job Bank notes that 66.3% of receptionists receive at least one non-wage benefit, such as a health plan, a pension or paid sick days.

How much does a receptionist really cost an employer in Canada?

The wage is the biggest line, not the only one. On every dollar of pay, an employer outside Quebec also pays:

Wages$42,640$49,920
Employer CPP (5.95% above $3,500)$2,329$2,762
Employer EI (1.4 x 1.63%)$973$1,139

Per month$3,828$4,485

What does a full-time receptionist leave uncovered?

A year has 8,760 hours. A full-time receptionist is paid for 2,080 of them. In Ontario, take out two weeks of vacation and nine public holidays at eight hours each and the desk is staffed for roughly 1,928 hours, about 22% of the year, before sick days, lunch breaks and the minutes spent on another call or with someone at the counter.

That is not a criticism of receptionists; it is the reason small offices still miss calls with a good person at the desk. Calls cluster in the morning, at lunch and right after a busy period, and nobody can answer two lines at once. Our guide to front desk overflow call handling covers what to do with the second and third caller.

The gap is large, but the comparison is uneven. A per-minute plan becomes expensive at high volume, and neither an answering service nor an AI can greet a patient, process a payment or file a document. Should you hire a receptionist or use an AI receptionist?

Hire a person when the front desk is physical work: patients or clients arriving all day, payments, forms, a waiting room to manage. Use an AI receptionist when the problem is the phone: calls after hours, calls while the desk is busy, and repetitive questions. Many Canadian clinics, law offices and trades businesses end up with both, a receptionist during the day and an AI line for overflow and evenings, which is often cheaper than a second hire.
