You search your own business name and nothing comes up. Or you show up for your name but never for "plumber near me" or "dentist in Kanata". Those are two different problems with different fixes. The first is almost always about status: verification, suspension or a duplicate. The second is about ranking: category, distance and prominence. This page helps you tell them apart and fix each one, using Google's own rules.

Why is my Google Business Profile not showing up in search?
Google's page on editing your Business Profile states the baseline: to show your business on Search, Maps and other Google services, you must add or claim it and then verify it. So the first question is always status. A profile that is unverified, pending verification, suspended or disabled will not show the way you expect, no matter how well it is filled in.
If the status is fine, the problem is ranking. Google's page on local ranking says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. A verified profile can be live and still invisible for the searches you care about because the category is off, the searcher is too far away, or competitors have more reviews and links.
How do I know if my Business Profile is verified?
Sign in to the Google Account that manages the profile and search your business name or "my business". The management panel shows whether you need to verify, whether verification is pending, or whether the profile is live. Google's verification guide explains the methods: phone or text, email, live video call, video recording and, for some businesses, a postcard. Google picks which methods you get, and some businesses must use more than one.
A few details from that page save weeks. Phone verification will not reach an automated phone menu, so answer the line yourself. Most postcard codes arrive within 14 days, codes expire after 30 days, and requesting a new code cancels the one in the mail. After you finish, Google says verification reviews take up to 5 business days, and you get a confirmation email when you are verified. If you were offered video, our video verification guide covers what to film.
Is my Google Business Profile suspended?
If the profile vanished suddenly, check for a suspension notice in the management panel and your email. Google may suspend or disable profiles that do not follow its guidelines. You can submit an appeal through the appeals tool, add evidence such as a business registration, licence, tax certificate or utility bill whose name and address match the profile, and Google notes that appeals can only be submitted once. It also warns: do not create a new profile for the same business. Our suspension fix guide walks through the appeal, and the 2026 crackdown fix list covers the keyword-stuffing pattern behind many recent suspensions.
Why does my business show up by name but not for my services?
That is a ranking problem, and the three factors Google names are where to look.
- Relevance and category. Google's edit guidance says to pick the category that best matches what your business does, and its guidelines say to choose the fewest categories that describe your core business. A dental clinic listed as "Health consultant" will struggle for "dentist". Our categories guide shows how to check what competitors use.
- Distance and proximity. Google says distance is how far each business is from the person searching. If you test from your home across the city, you are seeing a different result from a customer down the street. Test from the neighbourhoods you serve, or ask a customer to screenshot what they see.
- Prominence. Google says prominence draws on information such as how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have. A new profile with a handful of reviews will rarely outrank an established one with many. Steady reviews help; see how to get more Google reviews for free. For what else moves the map pack, our Google Maps ranking factors page summarises what Google and practitioners say.
Does inconsistent NAP stop a profile from showing?
It can hurt you in two ways. Google's local ranking page says that if your business info is not accurate, your profile might not show up for relevant searches in your area. And its guidelines say your name should reflect your real-world name as used on your storefront, website and stationery. Adding keywords or a city to the name to rank better is a common route to suspension.
Name, address and phone (NAP) that differ between your profile, your website and directories such as Yelp, YellowPages.ca or 411.ca also make it harder for Google to be sure all those mentions are you. Our NAP consistency checklist for Canada lists the directories to check first and how to fix mismatches.
How do I fix a Business Profile that is not showing up?
Go in this order. Each step rules out a cause before you spend time on the next.
- Search signed out. Open a private browser window and search your exact business name and city to see what customers see.
- Confirm verification. Sign in to the managing account and check for a Get verified or pending status; complete verification with the methods Google offers.
- Look for a suspension notice. Check the management panel and email. If suspended, fix the issue and use the appeals tool once, with matching documents.
- Check for duplicates. Search your phone number and any old address on Google Maps for a second listing, and ask support to resolve it.
- Tighten the primary category. Pick the single most specific category for your core service and remove categories that do not fit.
- Match your NAP everywhere. Make your name, address and phone identical on your profile, website and main Canadian directories.
- Test from where customers are. Check results from the neighbourhoods you serve, then build reviews and local links to grow prominence.
Here is the full checklist of the nine causes we check, what to look for and what to do.
| # | Cause | How to check | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Not verified or verification pending | Management panel shows Get verified or pending | Finish verification; allow up to 5 business days for review |
| 2 | Suspended or disabled | Notice in the panel or by email | Fix the guideline issue, then appeal once with matching documents |
| 3 | Wrong or vague primary category | Compare with the top three competitors for your main search | Choose the most specific category for your core service |
| 4 | Searcher too far away | Test from the areas you serve, not your home | Nothing to change; focus on areas you can realistically win |
| 5 | Low prominence | Fewer reviews and links than competitors | Ask every customer for a review; earn local links and citations |
| 6 | Name does not match signage | Extra keywords or city names in the business name | Use your real-world name only |
| 7 | Inconsistent NAP | Different phone, suite or spelling on site and directories | Make every listing match your profile exactly |
| 8 | Duplicate profiles | Search your phone number and old address on Maps | Ask support to merge or remove; never open a second profile |
| 9 | Ineligible address or set-up | Virtual office, P.O. box, unstaffed co-working desk | Use a staffed location or set up as a service-area business |

Can a service-area business show up in search without an address?
Yes. Google's guidelines say businesses that serve customers at the customer's location should have one profile for the central office with a designated service area, and that the overall service area should not extend farther than about 2 hours of driving time from where the business is based, though larger areas may be appropriate for some businesses. What is not allowed: a virtual office or rented mailbox you do not operate from, a P.O. box, or a co-working desk without signage, staff and customers during business hours.
For Canadian trades that cover a whole region, such as Ottawa and Gatineau or the Greater Toronto Area, this matters. You will tend to show most strongly near your real base, which is the distance factor at work. If you moved, Google's page on moving reviews says to update the address rather than create a new profile; reviews transfer automatically when the name stays the same, with some category exceptions. Business Profile not showing: FAQ
Why is my Google Business Profile not showing up?
The most common causes are an unverified or pending profile, a suspension, or a duplicate listing. If the profile is live, it may not rank for service searches because of a vague category, distance from the searcher, or low prominence.
How long after verification does my profile show on Google?
Google says verification reviews take up to 5 business days after you complete the steps, and you get a confirmation email when the business is verified.
Why does my business show on Maps but not in search?
Search and Maps results depend on the query and the searcher's location. Test the same query from the areas you serve, and check that your primary category matches what people search for.
Can I create a new profile if mine is suspended?
No. Google says not to create a new Business Profile for the same business. Fix the issue and submit one appeal with documents whose name and address match the profile.
Does adding keywords to my business name help it show up?
No. Google's guidelines say the name should match your real-world name on signage and stationery. Adding keywords or locations is a common cause of suspension.
Can a home-based business appear in Google search?
Yes, as a service-area business with a designated service area and the home address hidden. A virtual office, P.O. box or unstaffed co-working desk is not eligible.
What if my verification postcard never arrives?
Google says most codes arrive within 14 days and expire after 30 days. Do not request a new code too early, because that cancels the one in the mail; contact support if no option works.
