"Video verification not working" shows up as a Google autocomplete suggestion in Canada, and the threads on r/GoogleMyBusiness are full of owners on their third upload. Almost every rejection comes down to the same thing: the video did not show one of the three items Google's own help page asks for. This guide lists them exactly, then covers the Canadian wrinkles, the loop, and how to get a human.
Everything about Google's requirements below is taken from the two Google Business Profile Help pages linked in Sources, fetched October 24, 2026. If you are new to profiles altogether, start with our Google Business Profile guide for Canada.
What does Google ask you to show in a verification video?
Google's page on verifying with a video recording sets out the format first. The video must be an unedited, unique and complete recording with no breaks, at least 30 seconds long, recorded live and uploaded from a mobile device through your Business Profile. You cannot film it earlier and upload it later, and you cannot stitch clips. It must not include sensitive information such as bank, tax or ID numbers, private information about you or others, or other people's faces.
Then it asks for three kinds of proof, and your business type decides what counts.
- Location. For a storefront or hybrid business: street signs, building numbers, nearby businesses or familiar places that confirm you are where the map pin says. For a service-area business: street signs, landmarks or other identifiers at your business address, and Google warns against filming "empty land or locations without clear markers".
- Existence. Storefront: your storefront, showroom or signage, with the business name "clearly printed on a permanent fixture, like a signboard, wall, or window", and the name must match the profile. Service-area: the tools, equipment or products you work with, your workspace, business cards or branded apparel.
- Management. Storefront: things only an employee can access, such as opening a cash register, the kitchen, a storage room, or using a point-of-sale system. Service-area: performing a service, unlocking a van with your branding, or showing a business permit, invoice or utility bill that matches the profile name.
Google also says on its main verification page that methods are chosen automatically and cannot be changed, that it recommends video where it is offered, and that review takes up to five business days, occasionally longer.
| Requirement | Google's published rule |
|---|---|
| Minimum length | At least 30 seconds |
| Editing | None: unedited, unique, complete, no breaks |
| Recording | Live, in the Business Profile app on a mobile device; pre-recorded uploads not allowed |
| Must not show | Bank, tax or ID numbers; private information; other people's faces |
| Storefront proof of existence | Business name on a permanent fixture, matching the profile name |
| Service-area proof of existence | Tools, equipment, products, workspace, business cards or branded apparel |
| Proof of management | Employee-only access (till, kitchen, storage, POS) or unlocking a branded vehicle, or a permit, invoice or utility bill |
| Review time | Up to 5 business days; rarely longer |
| Rejection notice | "Review issues" button on the profile with the reasons |
| Postcard code (where offered) | Most arrive within 14 days; codes expire after 30 days |
| Instant verification | Possible when the website is verified in Google Search Console |

How do you film it? A 10-item checklist
- Go in daylight, during your business hours. Reviewers need to read signs; a dark clip is a rejection waiting to happen.
- Start outside, at the street. Film the street sign and the building number, then pan to a neighbouring business so the location is unmistakable.
- Walk to your sign and hold on it. Keep the full business name in frame for a few seconds. If the sign says "Maple Dental" and the profile says "Maple Dental Clinic", fix the profile first or expect a name mismatch.
- Go inside in one continuous take. Do not stop and restart. The whole point is a single, unbroken recording.
- Show something only staff can do. Open the till, the back office, the supply room, or log into the point-of-sale screen without showing customer or financial data.
- Keep faces out. Film before opening, or ask staff to step aside. Your own face is not required.
- Hide the sensitive paperwork. A business licence on the wall is good. A tax number or bank statement on the desk is a reason to reject.
- Aim for 60 to 90 seconds. The minimum is 30; a slower walk-through gives the reviewer time to see each item.
- Narrate as you go. Say the address, the business name and what you are showing. Audio is not required, but it helps the reviewer follow.
- Watch it back before uploading. The app lets you review and re-record. Check all three proofs are visible, then upload on Wi-Fi so it does not fail partway.
What is different for a service-area business in Canada?
Plumbers, electricians, cleaners, mobile detailers and many Ottawa and GTA trades run from home. Google's rule is firm: if you do not serve customers at your address, do not add that address to the profile; set a service area instead. The video still has to prove the three things, but the proof changes. Google's own tip is to film "landmarks and signs in your immediate neighborhood" to confirm the address, then your tools, your workspace, branded apparel or a branded vehicle, and a business permit, invoice or utility bill that shows the business name.
Canadian specifics worth knowing. Municipal home-business licences (Ottawa, Toronto and most cities issue them) are good management proof because they carry your business name and address. A Canada Revenue Agency letter is not, because it carries a business number, which is sensitive information under Google's rule. Winter is a real problem: snow hides street numbers and lawn signs, so film the municipal street sign and the house number plate on the wall. If your van is wrapped, open it on camera; that single shot covers existence and management at once. Our NAP consistency guide explains why the name on the permit, the van and the profile all need to match.
Why do verification videos get rejected?
Google's page lists three example reasons it shows under Review issues: "Business name not visible on storefront", "No nearby area shown" and "Missing proof of authorization to operate the business". In the Canadian threads, the same three account for most rejections, with a few extra causes.
- The name on the sign and the name on the profile differ by a word.
- The video starts indoors, so there is no street context.
- A service-area business films a residential front door with no tools, vehicle or paperwork.
- The clip is under 30 seconds or was stopped and restarted.
- A screenshot or a pre-recorded clip was used instead of a live recording.
- The business is a virtual office, a mailbox or online-only, which Google says is not eligible at all.
When you re-record after a rejection, Google asks you to include everything from the first video plus the missing items. Do not film only the missing piece.
What if you are stuck in a verification loop or have no options?
Two versions of this show up. In the first, the Get verified button reappears after you thought you were done. Google's page says this means it "couldn't completely verify your business" and asks you to re-verify, trying other methods if more than one is offered. In the second, the profile shows no verification options at all, or only a postcard to an address you no longer use.
What works, in order. Fix every data mismatch first: name, address format, category, hours, phone number that you can actually answer (Google warns that interactive voice menus will not receive a code). Check for a duplicate profile, because a second listing at the same address is a common reason the system refuses to offer options; Google's duplicate profiles page covers the merge request. Verify your website in Google Search Console, which Google says can trigger instant verification. Then try the live video call option during your business hours; it is a text chat with a support representative who then joins a video call and watches you show the same three proofs. Only after that, contact support.

How do you reach Google Business Profile support from Canada?
"Google Business Profile support phone number Canada" is a live autocomplete suggestion, and there is no such number on Google's help pages. The real paths, all free:
- The contact flow: support.google.com/business/gethelp. Sign in with the account that owns the profile, describe the issue, and you are offered email or chat depending on the case. Google's video page says plainly to try every available verification method first because it "makes it easier for us to provide assistance".
- Review issues button: on the profile itself after a rejected video. This is the fastest loop back into the queue.
- Live video call: under Get verified, where offered, within your business hours.
- The help community: support.google.com/business/community, where Product Experts can escalate stuck cases.
Anyone who phones offering paid verification is not Google, which states it will never ask for your verification code.
What should you do while you wait?
Five business days is long when the phone is quiet. Use them. Finish every field on the profile so the listing is complete the moment it goes live. Make sure the phone number on the profile is answered during the hours you list; a verified profile with unanswered calls is the most common leak we find in the free audit. Set up your review link and the message you will send customers. Claim your Bing Places and Apple Business Connect listings with the same name and address. And do not edit the name, address or category while a verification is pending, because Google says changes can invalidate the code or send you back to the start.
GBP video verification: FAQ
How long does Google video verification take in 2026?
Google says review takes up to five business days after upload, and occasionally longer. You get an email when it succeeds, or a Review issues button on the profile if the video was not accepted.
How long does the verification video need to be?
At least 30 seconds. It must be a single live, unedited recording made inside the Business Profile app on a mobile device, with no breaks and no pre-recorded footage.
What should a service-area business show in the video?
Street signs or landmarks at the business address, then the tools, equipment, workspace, business cards or branded apparel the business uses, and proof of management such as unlocking a branded vehicle or showing a permit, invoice or utility bill with the business name.
Why does Google keep rejecting my verification video?
The reasons Google lists are a business name not visible on the storefront, no nearby area shown, and missing proof of authorization to operate the business. Name mismatches between the sign and the profile and videos that start indoors are the usual culprits.
Can I upload a pre-recorded video for Google verification?
No. Google requires the footage to be captured live through the Business Profile app and says pre-recorded videos are not allowed. You also cannot record offline and upload later.
What do I do if Google gives me no verification options?
Fix any name, address or category mismatches, check for a duplicate profile and request a merge, verify your website in Search Console, try the live video call option during business hours, and then contact support through the help centre.
Is there a Google Business Profile support phone number for Canada?
Google does not publish one on its help pages. Support is reached by signing in at support.google.com/business/gethelp, which offers email or chat, plus the Review issues button, the live video call option and the help community.
Can an online-only business verify a Google Business Profile?
No. Google says businesses that operate online only and do not offer in-person services are not eligible for a Business Profile and cannot be verified.
